Re: 1995 Trojan 390 Express

These boats are pretty old and need a lot of attention and tlc…plus they aren’t a name brand. Not many young people are willing to put in the sweat and time to maintain them, and not many older people want the responsibility at this time if their life. This is a “turn a key and go” society, and if i...

Re: 1995 Trojan 390 Express

The Trojan 370, 390, and 400 were based on the the newest platform produced by Trojan in 1990 called the 10.8 meter express. It was produced for less than a year before Trojan went bankrupt and was sold to Carver. There were a lot of innovative features on this new boat that never made it out of the...

Re: '72 trojan houseboat crew quarters, standing water

It’s usually one of the following: Any thru hull fitting where the bedding material has decayed. Packings in either your shafts or rudders are dripping excessively and need to be adjusted or changed. Air conditioning has a leak or excess drainage into the bilge. Best thing is to make a plan to check...

Of course, some high hp outboards may be cool too....at $35k apiece.

Re: 10m mid cabin - power upgrade Crusader 8.1's

The diesel fantasy is my favorite to think about, but by far the hardest to justify. Everything would need to be changed, and high horsepower lightweight diesels are so expensive I’d need to take out another mortgage. It’s just not possible. Doing what Bob is doing or finding a good engine builder a...

Re: F28 Salon Wall

Good use of materials. I’ve never seen bamboo used on a boat, but it looks great.

I’ve watched your other work...I’m pretty confident you got this.

Re: 10m mid cabin - power upgrade Crusader 8.1's

These are my favorite thread topics. I have an embarrassingly underpowered boat and cannot justify the price of a diesel returb, so these types of options are great to watch.

Re: My First Boat - 1997 Trojan 390 Express - Caught between 2 worlds

It was during the time that gasoline was cheap. The only other option during that time was the Caterpillar 3116, which only produced 300 hp. It was an expensive option on a debatably reliable diesel. The boat was even slower with that diesel. If you wanted the fastest option, the 502 was it. Nowaday...

Re: My First Boat - 1997 Trojan 390 Express - Caught between 2 worlds

502 was originally an option, but I think they pulled it at last minute because of ongoing issues with engine consistency. When running well, they were great.

What’s your spreed at 32-3400 rpm s and wot?

Re: My First Boat - 1997 Trojan 390 Express - Caught between 2 worlds

Everything at this point is speculation. From talking to 2 Tojan guys, the relationship with Harry Schoell had soured, and Trojan was definitely looking for an alternative plan. They blame the design, but I think Harry was probably taking some big royalties considering every international had his hu...

Re: My First Boat - 1997 Trojan 390 Express - Caught between 2 worlds

Yes, totally understood. But I’m not sure what Carver changed in manufacturing and what they did that may have been consistent with the original Trojan 10.8 Express. I haven’t found a 370 owner who’s ok with me tearing apart their boat yet to compare. Lol When I see a 370 or 390, I usually poke arou...

Re: My First Boat - 1997 Trojan 390 Express - Caught between 2 worlds

Hey Rick, I know Carver used the molds from the new 10.8 Express. This new design was in its infancy with Trojan. Who knows where it would have led. Trojan put a lot of money and engineering into this new boat and I think wanted to compete with some big names in the Mediterranean. The one boat that ...

Re: My First Boat - 1997 Trojan 390 Express - Caught between 2 worlds

I checked the areas Bob mentioned today. If I could figure out photos I’d post them. You can access the fan motor area behind the cabinets in both the head and kitchen. I found that the entire area around the vent areas is solid fiberglass in that area. I have experienced coring in the radar arch, a...
