Re: Modern engine upgrades?

Thanks for the inputs everybody. The 350s are out for sure. I thought of 4.3 only because a well known V6 might be more saleable in today's markets. Good point about EPA regulations though I likely wouldn't buy new ones. Will check the engine vendors for now. Thanks all, Captain Steve

Modern engine upgrades?

I still love my 1980 F28, but...maintaining these thirsty 305s gets me to wonder about the sense or even the possibility of replacing them with newer motors. Something like a pair of late model automotive 4.3l injected V6s for example. I'm sure I could get even more than my existing 228 hp from a ne...

Re: 1980 F28 Merc 305 issue

Thanks for the suggestions, I will double check the plug wires. I have brand new distributors timed by a pro. Will also re-check the advance plates. I got a marina mechanic to suggest running up to the dead spot and spray a bit of fuel into the carb and see if there is acceleration; will also try th...

1980 F28 Merc 305 issue

Hi all, Managed to delete the long version of my question so here is the short. #2 engine will not go beyond 2500 rpm when under load. Neutral revs to 4000 easily. All new ignition and wires plugs etc, carb rebuilt, all cooling ok, vacuum lines, filters, timing checked. New fuel, switched tanks, con...

Re: 1973 Stalling After Running

I just wrote for help and accidentally erased the message and found yours, similar to mine. My F28 stbd would idle fine then run well for some time, then stall usually as I was trying to back in my slip. Excellent. Think we traced it to the coil overheating due to poor cooling (bad impeller), and so...

Re: Gas struts for engine lids

I finally made some progress. None of the companies I tried would help and now I see why. I finally called a machinist friend who designs odd machines to get his input. He said he knew exactly how to do it and it would only take one visit for measurements and a solid 2 hours on his $30K+ autocad des...

Re: Gas struts for engine lids

Follow up. McMaster-Carr won't help with retail sales, especially Canadian. US commercial only. No go with Attwood Marine. Industrial Gas Struts was a strike out, and Guden Hardware uses the same diagram as JR Products. Next try will be gitchisum's friend.

Re: Gas struts for engine lids

Larry and gitchisum, I'm making progress on the struts but what a hassle. I am just waiting to hear back from a company and will post you when I hear. I only had the 42.5 lb door fall on my head once last season. Did I say I love this boat? FYI I have just bought from Hot Spark Ignition 2 electronic...

Gas struts for engine lids

I am trying to put a pair of gas struts on each engine lid for safety. Attwood used to do the calculations but no more (thanks a lot). there are way too many variables for trial and error, so I'm hoping someone knows how to do the calculations. Just in case, my two doors are about 40 lbs each, dista...

Re: My first Trojan

Will post some photos as soon as I get my head out of the bilges and take some; not much in there worth a photo. A new question though, before getting this F28, I looked at a wooden 31 with a very cool dual style timing light instrument to aid in synching both engines. Each engine had a flashing sem...

My first Trojan

Well I finally got my 79/80 F28 transported, launched, reassembled, and underway to her new home in Prescott, Ontario via Kingston and the 1000 Islands. right away had a problem with #2 not running under load and finally traced it to a poor points gap. Had to go on one engine for 30 miles or so righ...

Humidity cure

Just in case anyone is having humidity troubles, I have a cheap cure. Working for the City of Ottawa in the winter we use bags of calcium chloride to open frozen drains. It's the same stuff sold at marinas in little bags for big prices. Get a big bag from an auto parts store and spread no more than ...

Re: 1980 F28 with 305s

Well if the Nada boat value guide is correct, then I am about to go look at a 79 not an 80. It looks like Trojan went to a 29' in 1980. That would explain why there are no references. Hope the 7 hour trip is worth it. Fingers crossed...

1980 F28 with 305s

I'm trying to find info on a 1980 F28 that I'm about to look at, and can't find any references to the 1980 version. Anyone have any experience or thoughts? Twin 228s, much in original condition.
Thanks,
Wetbuoy
