The wood is pretty solid down there. Its the upper perimeter of the hull that got soaked.
The stainless parts were available and time is passing ... Do you see any corrosion issues with this? Was told it will be fine.
Thanks.

Kainer Shaft Log

I've searched a bit but can't seem to find much on this, maybe I didn't find the right terms for this vital assembly, so feel free to let me know. Our 1969 42ft had some leaks and the service guys tightened nuts inside and the carriage bolt heads popped through the fiberglass. Since the boat's been ...

Re: Gas Tank Failure

I assume the 2 tanks under the beds are for water. They are very large. They are also very accessible.
Seems a bit dangerous having them right beside those monster engines.

Re: Gas Tank Failure

Sounds scary, is there a liner solution, or some recommended fix? Thanks.[/quote] If they are as bad as I know they can be, the fix is to replace them. I know there are a few alternatives out there from bladders to coatings but bladders aren't an option in tanks with baffles without an unreasonable ...

Re: Gas Tank Failure

I'm told that the gas tanks are subject to failure because they are sitting on moist wood. Does anyone have any further info on this? 1969 model, 42ft. Thanks That is correct and your vintage is likely galvanized which typically rust from the inside out. While they may look okay on the outside, the...

Re: New member with 69 - 42' Trojan/ Shepherd

Ahoy, Robert Welcome to the forum. Yep, I got a bit of the rot as well with my 42 Sea Voyager commissioned in 1969 for the 1970 model year. Lots of replacement areas but I am all wood. I didn't know she came in Fiber in 1969. Must have been shepherd that did that. Here is a few shots. Great fun and...

Re: Shore Power Problem

ShortSol.jpg I solved the shorting problem by working backwards, first disconnected the feed wires to the panel from both side shore power feeds from the main power selector switch and powering those up one at a time. As soon as I reconnected though, the short happened again. It seems there was a f...

Re: Fixing Detached Fiberglass

Well it is a 1969...I would say that water got in and froze then expanded over and over through the winter. It probably was inconsistent bonding between your substrate (plywood) and the fiberglass and resin, which allowed moisture to get in and spread. Its tough to get a 100% bond without vacuum bag...

Re: Fixing Detached Fiberglass

Just found a few pictures, this one reveals a few more things. I let everything dry out for a few weeks the tore away all the loose wood with the wire wheel. I used two pieces of 1/2" plywood for the top area that was too saturated, with the fiberglass mesh in between, staggered all the joints ...
