Re: Buying Old trojan Houseboat

Go over the sterndrive with a fine toothed comb, repairs on those can get costly. Looks like a older Merc Alpha MR. You want to make sure all is in order there before she is launched or you could be paying for a haul out soon after.

Congrats and good luck with her.

Re: 1981 6.5 onan generator

The Onan (and Kohler) carbon monoxide problem was due to an OEM steel nipple between the manifold and elbow. It would rot from the inside out so it wasn't noticeable, and when it finally failed, you'd get CO in the cabin. A bulletin was issued by both manufacturers with the recommendation to replace...

Re: water flow

Given that the OP mentioned it's a dual pocket pump, we have to assume he's referring to the raw water pump and not the circ pump. It should also be noted that if it's a dual pocket pump application, in every such 440 application I've dealt with, they've never had a circ pump. I've only seen circ pu...

Re: Hydraulic Rudder Control or lack there of

This type of hydraulic steering MUST be pressurized with air for it to operate properly. There are a couple of differences between it and a non pressurized system but essentially it operates the same way in that the helm is the pump. Unlike others, you don't want to remove the fill cap on the helm w...

Re: Raymarine - repair or replace ???

That's a hard call. I can tell you that the earlier DSMs and E series MFDs had software and hardware issues. The ducer you have is a robust unit and has been one of Airmar's work horses for years, and I've heard good things about the CP370 unit. I've been running older stuff than yours for years wit...

Re: Battery Charger Replacement 12 Meter

I've installed dozens of ProMariner ProNautic P chargers. They have some beneficial features and in my experience a pretty low failure rate. I've installed several different brands but the ProMariner seems to be my most popular. They have digital displays and LED indicators for different functions o...

Re: Crusader 270 fuel line leaking

Larry, I'd use stainless line, especially if you're anywhere near salt water. There shouldn't be a problem with it sealing. Take a close look to ensure nothing is cracked from having been over-tightened in the past. Check the fittings externally and the flared mating surface inside. The line should ...

Re: Ford 233 issues

I would start with a compression test followed by a leak-down test. This will tell you if you're dealing with an upper or lower end problem. If the low cylinders are adjacent, it may be as simple as a head gasket. Post the cylinder numbers and the results, it may provide some clues. When you say &qu...

Re: Crusader engine overheat shutoff?

Unless there was an aftermarket system installed, there's no OEM high temp shut off in that vintage that I can remember. Do you have an automatic engine shutdown system on board like a Fireboy? Check this link for an idea of what the control box looks like. The ES or ELS units closer to the bottom o...

Re: Changing toilet system from vaccuflush???

The Raritan is a good unit and will last a long time. It too has maintenance items to look after but so do all toilets. Between the cost of parts which I'm assuming everything needs to be replaced and labor if you get someone else to do it, ya easily a few thousand at our prices north of the boarder...

Re: Changing toilet system from vaccuflush???

There are dozens of toilets to choose from. Check out the West Marine link below. Each brand and model has there pros and cons. The Raritans are very good units and will outlast the cheaper throw-away ones but are a lot more expensive. At the other end of the scale are units such as Jabsco manual to...

I wouldn't get rid of the Racors. They're an easy filter replacement and being able to see the condition of your fuel is priceless, especially diesel. Servicing them is easy once you get the hang of it.

There are usually bleeder fittings on the steering ram or just turn the wheel back and forth several times and it will bleed on its own.
