Oh, the humanity!

Well, she doesn't look quite as bad as the Hindenberg this spring, but Das Boot still needs a lot of work. I want to repaint and re-caulk inside and out. Question: how to bottom paint an inboard hull on a trailer? I've done this before by jacking up one back corner at a time, and then the front, but...

Muskrat, Very nice. I like the way you worked in the red chines and the darker (brown?) bottom. I've been trying to figure a good color scheme for my '61. It comes down to whether I want to include a waterline. Some were painted that way, apparently, but you end up without the emphasis on the nice s...

I'll have to be ready for anything this year, because I'm afraid old Das Boot is going to need a compete caulking, paint, varnish, and maybe some soundproofing/floatation gear (I've been saving squares of 1" EPS foam packing). As you can see in the pic accompanying my posts, the V8 sort of take...

Thanks oldboat1. I've had good luck with West System stuff in the past. One problem is, though, I never cut up any mahogany so I have no sawdust! That dark mahogany is hard to find. Some fill materials will take stain, but it never looks quite right.

Tom, Welcome aboard! I would say that Jacob has something very similar in his Evinrude vintage powered Trojan. Maybe you'd like to reply to his thread on his 14' runabout, or send him a PM. I don't know much about the outboard runabouts, except they look like pretty sweet boats. You can e-mail me if...

That is a very interesting boat. It has nice detail touches like the trick built in tables on the seat-backs, all the mahogany accents, etc. The vintage Evinrude looks really nice too. Is that the 2-cycle that fires both cylinders at the same time? Very nicely kept up boat all around, and yet obviou...

"What I did in my Runabout, Summer 2010"

This thread could just as well be titled "What I did in, on, around, and maybe through my Trojan Runabout this past summer." My story is not so bad: I staunchly avoided additional maintenance after last summer's major transom surgery. So, I had some time to take it out (also sans badly nee...

k9th, While nothing is ever really "resolved" on a 49-year-old wooden boat, there has been some improvement for now, I think Speaking of putting boats in when you can, and how hard it is with a barely 6-month season up here, it's remarkable that Minnesota, at least in the past few years, h...

I agree. I should take another pic of my prop for you. it's Soooo pretty. Had it all spiffed up at Lance's Prop Shop in Forest Lake, and I don't mind putting in a "plug" for him here (pun intended). Seriously, these old ski tows are very tough and surprisingly forgiving of amateur restorat...

Thanks for the heads-up. I have returned the old Bee to the water, and left the tabs as is for now, since I had no way of knowing how to set them up any differently, and they make dandy through-the-wood support for the bottom of the transom. They might get it up on plane a little more easily by prov...

Would a nice wad of 3M bedding compound be about right for a permanent fix? That's as far as I got last year, and I wanted to get out on the water sometime before labor day for a change. So that's how she sits. Got the prop all prettied up, and went halfway across the lake before my wheezy old fuel ...

Winterizing?

Winterizing plans... I just store mine (inboard V-8 ) with empty water jackets. I've heard that some fill with antifreeze/water mix to prevent corrosion. I just don't know if the rubber vanes in my water pump would like that. Never had anything plugged with rust. I "ran" my SkiBee 4 or fiv...

What I did on my Summer Vacation

If you follow Red Green, you will know that one of his boat buying tips
BAD SIGN is: "Transom held on by duct tape.' Well, here it is:
