Boats needed! Get free food, discounted fuel, and a slip at Bay Bridge Marina on June 9th!

Post by P-Dogg »

Wanna write-off the cost of a trip driving to and from your boat?
Wanna be treated to a cookout?
Wanna write-off the cost to get your boat to and from the Bay Bridge, as well as a couple hours of fuel?
Wanna be entered to win valuable prizes, like chartplotters, inflatable water toys, and Magma grills?
Wanna help the March of Dimes?
Ever had Mission Barbecue deliver hot food to your boat?

The short story is, boats are needed to support the Great Bay Swim on June 10. Every year scores of swimmers try to swim the 4.4 miles from shore-to-shore between the spans of the Bay Bridge to support charities including the March of Dimes. Not all of them make it. Boats are needed to pick-up stragglers and get them to shore. That's where you come in.

Here's the rundown:
Starting around noon on Saturday the 9th, you can check into a slip at Bay Bridge Marina. Avail yourself of the amenities, such as the pool. Overnight slips and electricity are free to volunteer boats.

Saturday evening, there is a free catered cookout at Kentmoor Marina a few miles south -- just show-up and eat. There is also a captain's meeting, where you begin to earn your keep.

Sunday morning, you need to be on-station at the west side of the bridge around 0800. Exact time given at captain's meeting the night before.

Boats stand-by as the swimmers do their thing, and pick-up those that need it. No props near the swimmers -- kayaks inside the spans, jet skis next, and mother ships ~200 feet outside the spans (That's where I'll be). When you are at capacity, you can head in to Bay Bridge marina. I think the most I ever picked-up was 4 people. You'll be done in the early afternoon.

Last year while all this was going on, the ex Coast Guard small boat S.S. Sea Brisket from the Annapolis Mission Barbecue was delivering hot meals!

Because you are volunteering your services to charity, you are probably eligible to write off your direct expenses while supporting this event.

I am not a principal in this event, nor am I a member of the Chesapeake Bay Powerboat Association, but I do volunteer my boat to help CBPBA help this charitable cause. This year it seems they are short of boats, so I got the go-ahead to spread the word. If you can help out, send me a PM and I'll put you in contact with the folks that will sign you up. The sooner the better!

I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

Hope to do this next year, sounds like fun as well as a good way to help out.

This year is out for us -- our oldest daughter is moving in a couple of weeks and this is our last weekend to work on her stuff before the move.
