12 Meter Pulpit

Has anyone removed the pulpit for a 12M? Around the windlass is seems soft. Balsa cored? I'm debating whether to remove the pulpit and get it fixed or just have it fixed in place. Seems like a whole lot of work to disconnect the windlass and the remote spotlight since there are PVC junction boxes way inside the rope locker.

The previous owner of our boat replaced it with a aluminum panel.

Ok so I removed the 10 carriage bolts, the windlass, the foot switch, two stanchions and the remote spot light. i can only get it to move slightly. I cleared out all the caulk as much as I could and a putty knife goes through the stuff that is deeper. Would there be lots of caulk between the pulpit and the boat? Any ideas on how to loosen up the caulk?

Try a little heat on the plate and a wire like a guitar string under the plate to cut the caulk, also some heavy fishing line.

Got those, 5 from the top down and 5 from under the rub rail, all accessible from the locker.

Thanks Prowlerfish for the idea. Took a while, but adding wooden wedges and making it spread apart every few days worked.
It finally popped out today, maybe because it got up to a nice 61-degrees out. Below freezing tomorrow night.

Now I have to decide to restore the Sea Wolf 520 windlass or get something new. The block that lifts it needs glass work, the unit itself needs work. The new stainless stuff is more low profile. Anyone change theirs out?

I have the Lewmar Pro 1000 same windlass without free fall . I bought at a great price with the intent of making it free fall , well it powers down so fast I just left it alone . Very happy with it

El L Sea, did you have the "block" that raised the windlass up about 4 inches before you switched? Or did the previous owner do that too?
I think the thickness of the pulpit plus the decking would rule out a vertical windlass. I have to do more research on that.

The current design is is to use a clutch lever to release the clutch which puts it into free fall. If I want to raise it, I have to use the foot switch.

Even that switch gets temperamental on occasion. I'd rather get something that I can control from the helm. There seems to be some nice remote control options out there so I don't have to hard wire the control wires.

The previous owner put in the aluminum. There is like a 1" block of Starboard under it. We changed out the existing anchor for a Rocna 44lb. Vulcan Anchor Model 20 with 100 feet of 5/16" G4 chain spliced to 200 feet of Nylon Brait 8-Strand Rope. It works fine for us. The windlass sits right above the hole and drops straight in.

I'm guessing the 1" starboard is there to cover up the blemishes of the old setup.
I'm trying to understand why the Sea Wolf 520 was installed on the 4" block to begin with. Was is for decoration or for purpose?
It seems like if your setup works fine with just a 1 inch lift a zero inch lift after I get the pulpit redone would work as well.

I thought if the 4" block was for purpose, it was to increase the angle or the level of the chain before it went to the anchor roller.
