10.8 Trojan Fresh Water Mystery

Post by MagnusTrojan10.8 »

Folks I’m a new Trojan 10.8 owner. Everything is checking out so far on the systems except for this: I filled the fresh water tank first time and noticed the next day that I had no water. We used the head a couple of times, and some water for brushing teeth. That was it. Traveled from Bowdoinham to Portland and same thing. Filled the tank, empty soon after. I flipped on the three bilge pumps thinking that perhaps the water was leaking out into the bilge but no real discharge as I’d expect to see. When I flip the water pump switch, it primes over and over and we get water. Turn it off and try again a few hours later and it’s all gone.
Thoughts?
Thank you!

first thing

Fill the tank and turn off the automatic pump

see if the tank empties

this will determine on which side of the pump the leak will be found

We need to determine if you have a built into the hull tank or a conventional tank.

If your 10.8 was designed and built with a full liner, then you have a built into the hull water and wastewater tank.

If you have the full liner version with the built in tank I would first start with the supply hose that leads to the pump.

It will be found inside the forward bilge compartment, where it attaches to the back bottom side of the tank and then runs to the pump in the engine room.

Do you have any photos of the engine room or of the bilge areas?

Thank you. It looks as if I have pumps in one of the two forward compartments. When I turn on F/Water P and have a freshwater hose connected, water works ok. Not great but OK. Once we turn it off, zero.
Called mechanic and he said “it’s usually the filter on pump forward getting clogged. I cleaned it. No way.

Here’s some pics. Thank you for your help!

I disconnected the lines one at a time on both ends of water pump while it ran. Dry. Nothing. This was after filling it up.
Hers what the manual says about my system.
How do I access the 55 gallon tank?
I see the forwRd plastic tank in the bow, but since the mace ration pump is next to it. I’m assuming it’s the waste tank. Frankly I’m lost.

it appears to me you have a later model non-liner boat and a conventional tank.

If you fill up the tank and leave the pump turned off, and it still leaks the leak is either the tank or the hose going to the pump.

I once used food coloring to quickly locate my own leak

SAFETY NOTE:

It is my understanding that batteries in gasoline powered boats are to be secured in an enclosed space/container/box/etc

Thanks RWS!
The battery boxes are plastic and secured to flooring underneath.

I found the problem. It was not a leaky tank, etc. hot water pressure valve was set in the open position so it kept venting pressure and couldn’t pump water...unless the external hose was hooked up, and even then the flow was bad.
Now all good. Pump turns and off as required if minor pressure drop or use. Very glad for the help from the forum!

And you'll want to do something about the two loose wires encumbering the bilge pump float switch.

Glad your mystery is solved.
I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!
