Then how does the top end get oil? The chevy 350s, 396, and 496 all had them to oil the head. Does it come in through a port and you hope it runs all the way down to the back end?
Thats kind of how it works

That is it. The oil comes up thru the head to the rocker shaft which is hollow and then goes to each rocker, spring and pushrod from there. Those shafts have to be installed in the right orientation or the oil will be blocked, but that would just make the pressure higher below. Who sold you the parts for this repair. A known good gage on the engine should show pressure when pre-oiling or there is a problem.

I have seen pick ups in the pan with too small a clearance to the bottom, cause all sorts of problems and the previously mentioned things.

I ordered them offline. I guess that's what I get for being a chevy guy working on a mopar.

I'm Chevy guy too . If you still have them put the old push rods back in ( and maybe the lifters ?)

I've been dealing with this issue for over 2 months. I threw them all out shortly after I closed it all back up. I'll order some solid pushrods and get it done this weekend. Hopefully.

mpjosh2001 wrote: Thu Sep 19, 2019 6:49 pm The pump spun freely before I installed it. The new lifters were the same size as the old ones.
So another issue to cross off the list that may help, did you measure the lifter diameter with a micrometer or caliper and compare to the old ones before installing. Like I said before some blocks had an oversize lifter bore and require lifters to fit, somewhere around .008", please don't quote as its been a long time.

Put solid rods in. Still no pressure and it sounds worse.

Is the oil pump different for marine vs automotive? This is a reverse rotation engine. If it is different, can someone point me in the right direction. I put a milling 72hv on it.

If they sold you the wrong push rods I really have to wonder about the lifters . Also the the pump . If it uses a gasket ( I dont recall ) is it on right and no old gasket .

It's not that someone sold me the wrong stuff, I ordered the wrong stuff. I didnt talk to anyone, just searched chrysler 318 and ordered what I thought I needed. There is a gasket on the pump. The surface was cleaned and bolts torqued to spec.

Have you got the part number for the lifters handy ?

The Melling pumps are the ones, M-72 and the M-72HV which I believe you got, you don't really need a high volume pump for an old engine like you have, a standard will work just fine. But you only lost pressure after the lifter change according to your earlier posts, so really the pump was not an issue but could be now if not fitted to the pan correctly. Good luck man, I am out of ideas for now.

No clue on the quality or fit of the lifters Sealed powers part # is HT 2011 $4.29 at Avance $9.00 amazon . Mike said something about possible over size needed ? I am not mopar guy so not sure .

So something I have not brought up . Why did you feel the need to put the lifters and hollow push rods in to improve oil flow ? was there a issue before ?

How bad did it over heat ? coolant or water in the oil ? Is it possible the bearings got wiped out ? How long has it been run with out pressure ?

Things were running fine earlier in the season. Went out and it was smoking really bad. Checked oil and found water in the oil. Pulled the heads and had them checked out. They were warped .007 and cracked between all the valves.

There was no oil issue before. Me being a chevy guy, I've always dealt with hollow rods. So, I swapped them out thinking it would make things better. It didnt. I swapped solid rods back into it yesterday and it didnt improve. I'm getting only 6 psi. I'm thinking about swapping the lifters out, but gotta wait until payday. I don't know what else to do. I'm about ready to blow it in place.

Are you raw water cooled or do you have coolant ?
