12 Meter Exhaust Pipe Cracked

While I was winterizing I noticed water dripping from my port exhaust joint where the 8-inch rubber pipe joins to the molded fiberglass pipe just before it exits the boat. The layout is exhaust manifold to the muffler to the 8-inch hose to the fiberglass exhaust pipe. With the motor off, the drip is slow, most likely salt water sloshing around because that joint is more or less at the waterline. When it's running it speeds up due to more water flow coming from the engine. Pipe looks fine Shields 8-inch series 200 no wire. I tightened the hose clamps. No difference. Now that I'm on land, I performed a "colonoscopy" and put my phone on a stick and sent it up the port exhaust. What I found was two cracks. One actually looks more like a saw blade cut. I'm sure taking that hose off is going to be a PITA. But once it's off, what is the fix? I can't add fiberglass to the outside of the pipe because I'll never get the hose back on. Just adding fiberglass to the inside seems like it would be weak. Suggestions?

Do you have transom or side exhaust ? Is the pipe glassed to the hull ?If not I would replace the pipe photos from a distance would help .

Yes, pipe is glassed into the hull. Changing the entire pipe is not an option. The pipe extends inside the boat. One thought is to cut away the broken part and then buy a longer 8-inch hose.

You could cut it if its long enough . But I would look in to repairing it .

Can the cracks be covered if you slip a new hose on further ? If so just drill a small hole at the end of the cracks to stop them cracking further clean and fill with epoxy and then put the hose on to cover the repaired area.Just an idea.

Here is another pic. It's leaking under the blue rag.

Hopefully you don't have something like this going on. This hose was on the head waste line and the cut went past the hose clamp so waste was leaking into the bilge. I guess the hose was too hard to get on the fitting so they slit it to make it easier to install!

That's nuts! Especially with a waste line. Loosened the clamps on the 8-inch and of course neither side will budge. Tried putting a putty knife in from one end to loosen up the seal. No luck. Will try some heat next. If that fails we have two options 1) cut the hose in half and we should be able to get one side off then buy a fiberglass male-male coupling to go where we cut the hose, or 2) buy a new hose. I was partial to the blue silicone hose that has the same SAE 2006 R1 rating. That stuff is so flexible and easy to install but $$$$.

New hose will be easier to work with black or blue , just stay away from the stuff with wire .

This is one reason why I like to do all of my own work. Thankfully, I haven't found such poor crapsmanship on anything I have replaced, which has been a lot. Am rebedding my hull to deck joint at the moment...
I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

Project Done. What I thought was a crack in the pipe was actually a saw blade cut from who knows when. I cut off about a foot of the 8 inch hose to inspect since I could only tell so much from the camera I put up the exhaust. Before I cut the hose I put a chain strap wrench on the ends to try and break the seal, no good. I tried putting a hack saw blade up there too and no luck. So I made the executive decision to cut the pipe to get a better look. What's the worst that could happen? Replace the pipe? How bad could that be? Should have done a price check first $120/foot. Let me check for silicone hose since that can be compressed for the installation that was even more money, and rare. That hurt.
When I cleaned up the pipe and took a better look it wasn't actually a crack causing the leak but an old saw blade that was used and cut through the fiberglass. I also had a friend tell me that he would have just changed the pipe clamps first. Then he mentioned Flex Seal. No invites for him. From an earlier photo he said the wrong hose clamps were used, should have had the wider T-bolt clamps on there from the start. I looked at the other clamps on the muffler side and they were T-bolts. It was just these two at the leak site that were wrong. I didn't pick up on that. The hose was 40-inches to the muffler, so nobody would sell me 40 inches, I had to buy 4 feet. But then I tried to figure out how to get the hose on with a male from the exhaust and a male from the muffler. I'm assuming the mufflers went in before they were connected to the motors and I wasn't about to take the mufflers out, connect the hose and then slide the mufflers back in. I searched the web for anyone who might have tried this and I found a youtube video of a guy replacing a coupling on his boat which had fiberglass pipe on both sides. He eventually got it on with plenty of lube. Wire or no wire this 8 inch hose is stiff, no flexibility at all. So from my construction days the idea of a copper slip coupling came. I took off the hose, cut a piece of fiberglass pipe to fit between the two and loaded up with dish soap two sections of hose that I could slide over the opposite male ends. I took the existing hose and cut off a piece to make a slip coupling. Used the rule that coupling length should be the diameter. 8 inches, 4 inches goes on one side 4 on the other. I added an inch for cushion. It friggin' worked like a charm. New T-bolt clamps everywhere and I'm done. 24 inch piece of fiberglass pipe Centek Vernatube was $150. $60 in T-bolt clamps. JB Weld on the saw blade kerf. No more leak. If the starboard side leaks, I'm breaking out the Flex Seal!
