Definiately tie down the stern. Momentum = Mass X Velocity. The heavier something is, the harder it is to stop once moving.

I finally made time to work on my trailer and got the rear bunk "brackets" on. I say brackets because rather than buy the standard brackets made for bunks, I fabbed my own using 1 1/2 in uni-strut welded to the frame. Will post pics soon. (Roy if you see this, are your front bunks the same height as the rears?)

Up here in Canada failure to have the rear strapped is a violation of the highway rules.... is that not true for the US too :?:

Gettin' Closer

Post by superman3385 »

I've been workin alot lately on the trailer and it's coming along suprisingly well. I started with a flat trailer and welded unistrut to the frame for the bunk supports. The rear axle was bent so I had to heat it up and bank it bat straight. I also welded steel beams that I found to support the front bunks a little better. I used 12 foot 2x12's for the rear bunks with steel bolts through the unistrut, bunk board, and out the unistrut on the other side with a lock nut on it. I screwed 8 foot 2x8's to the front support beams and had my bunks fabbed. I put a wire brush on my angle grinder and smoothed out the existing paint on the frame and primed and painted it with spray paint I got at Sears for cheap. I also carpeted the bunks with 18" industrial carpet squares that I have a pile of, and nailed them on with button caps. The only thing I didn't do that I probably should have done was bevel the rear bunks to match the dead rise in the hull before I put on the carpet. If It seems to be too wobbly, I may pull the carpet and bevel it. I've posted progress pic's on photobucket for anyone who's interested. http://s962.photobucket.com/albums/ae11 ... 5/Trailer/

What does the keel rest on or is the boat supported by the bunks?

The bunks should be high enough that the keel clears the frame and the boat sits entirely on the bunks. After I get the boat on it, I may add a couple of keel rollers once I know how high she's going to sit.

I only asked because I understood that Trojan's are designed to support their weight mainly on the keel... I don't know how different your boat might be to mine. I would add the rollers if it were me and especially if it was stored on the trailer for any length of time

I did not kmow that. I purposely built it high because I didn't want to harm the keel. Thanks for the insight. I guess I mat be modifying some more. Although, looking at the pic's that Roy posted of Foofer B, it doesn't look like his keel is resting on anything. I'll have to look into this as mine will be trailered for the winter. Thanks again!

Michael is right on the money with the keel. There is one more thing that you may want to consider about the bunks. If you slide your boat down a ramp all of the time this wont matter but if your boat goes on or off of the trailer by travel lift, you'll want to cut sections out of the bunks where the slings have to go.

Hope this helps

Whew!!! Relief and triumph!! In low water, on an untested trailer, by two guys who've never trailered a boat before, we got her up and brought her home. Had the tires on my Rover half submerged but got out with no problem. She does sit pretty high, but is incredibly stable. Will post pics soon! Special thanks to Roy for the specs on his trailer for Foofer B.
