Great App for IPad with 3G

Post by jhalb »

I downloaded this app from ITunes for $49.99. It's Navionics and has all the infirmation I need for night crusing. You can load differant maps from the US or any country you need. It has the river levels and dykes pictures and shows my location like a GPS. I have navigated at night with no moon light what so ever. It also has weather and tides which i don't need. Check it out if you have an Ipad with 3g servise.

Ah, remember the old days when you took a bunch of numbers from a 3 inch screen and had to find them on a chart to tell you where you were. A friend has that app and he loves it.

I've got the Navionics charts app too. $14.99 I don't see anything that's 49.99? in Itunes...

Can you provide a link...It's from Navionics? I want to see why the difference...

Correction...$9.99 is the one I have which covers everything, lakes, water ways, tides, marine locations, depths, contours, bouys, markers, etc, throughout the US. Here is a snapshot from my Iphone.

Just remember that it does not use actual GPS but rather cell tower signals so it will not be as accurate. For the price how can you beat it.

The IPad version looks like it's 4 times the cost of the iPhone app. I have no idea why the difference.

Well actually, it not only uses actual GPS signals, but the Russian version of GPS, GLONASS, too. I use mine while flying and taxiing aircraft on the ground and it is darned accurate. Always shows me in the middle of the taxiway (I had to say that in case any FAA FSDO inspectors read this).

Three thoughts :

1 - cool
2 - you should always carry (and know how to read and use) paper charts too, for if and when the iPad (or whatever electroncc navigation system you are using) craps out
3 - don't you find the illumination of the screen messes with your night vision?

The first time I used at night it blinded me. I found the brightness control and now it blends with my other gauges.
