Working and fixing things on a boat can be fun . But its great when you do something that makes the boat or boating a lot better . I always wanted a transom door and theres a chance this is the year.

Got the fix for the itch and a transom door no saw needed . Just scared of dealing with german enginering as it sucks ( Mann's) .

And no I don't need to own 4 boats But then again why do we even need 1 boat ?

It beats the crap out of anything we make over here. The Germans have been running circles around us in both gas and diesel engine technology for decades upon decades. A good set of metric tools is all that is needed to find out its actually us who suck in the engineering department.

Bull , Its a myth anymore . look at a 1000 hour service on a Mann .Ita almost a overhaul to keep them up. why would you need to replace injectors at 1000 hours ? spending 10k and up to do a 1000 hour sevice ? You don't see that on Cummins or Even a Cat .

Yes there engineering was near the top but they have fallen near the back of the pack for the last decade or 2 .

we will have to disagree as a hands on guy I don't see it .

Expensive to do the maint. at factory reccomended intervals for sure. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them, just that you need deeper pockets to keep them in your stable if you want them to be nice. 1000 hours is a lot of use for the average owner. I would say for 90% of boaters in the US that represents 10 years or more of boating. Over time the expense really isn't that bad. If you can afford to drop a grand in the tanks a couple times a season and pay for storage, you can afford the rebuild every dozen years or so.

Cummins=MerCruiser=Volkswagen TDI these days. :shock:

They might say Merc but they are Cummins/VW's :D

Even your guys came around to my way of thinking. Now, if they would just paint them black they would be really onto something! ;)

Not quite , Many in the know say these chain saw diesels where the reason for the end of the Cummins/mercruser Joint venture . CMD( Cummins mercruser diesel ) was a Joint venture between Cummins and Mercruser . They Sold VM diesels( made in Italy) thru mercruser with a Cummins badge on then , They did not live up to the cummins name ( or mercruser for that matter) . In 2010-2011 I believe the decision was made to add the VW marine diesel line . Shortly afterward ( Dec 1 2011)Cummins announced the end of the joint venture .

Bottom line Cummins has nothing to do with these VW marine engines . They are all Mercruser babys ( along with VM )
Best thing about them The white paint .

Ya cummins came around and got smart .

Merc/VW is a new venture independent of issues with Cummins/Merc. The reason for the divorce was but not limited to, the problems/restrictions with servicing the Zeus pod drive, and software control. A properly trained Merc marine mechanic or rep was rarely allowed to set foot on a boat that had a Zeus operational complaint. Cummins would send one of their techs to address the issue. What happened all too often was greasie heavy equipment mechanics showing up to work on boats with white plush carpets, being completely knowledgable about the engine systems for the most part but little about the pod or marine systems. Hense they parted ways as Zeus sales fell behind Volvo's IPS. The divorce is the best thing that could have happened to Zeus as Merc can now adapt the Zeus to be bolted up to several engines rather than being limited to Cummins. The little white VW engine is pretty cool.

There was many issues with merc , Zeus May have been part of it , I know Zeus pods are being used with Cummins and Cat now . Cummins had had a lot of issues with VM and I don't believe VW looked much better to them .

The VM engines really had a lot issues to early to tell about the VW . there fine in light duty automotive use ( like the VM ) , marine use is a whole other ball game . Time will tell .

when they broke up the venture ,Cummins went with all the above 5.0 L diesels ( their own)and mec the under 5.0 L ( the lagrest merc was 4.2 and the smallest Cummins 5.9 at the time)

It was not a happy marriage for sure.

Anyway the point was Cummins never used VW or sold VW engines .
