What Did You Get For Christmas?

Post by The Dog House »

What did everyone get for Christmas? My big present was 20 feet of 1 inch ID Shields Flex II hose. I plan on replacing most of my hoses this Spring.

I would like to chime in on this one. There under the tree sat a brand new dometic msd porta potty. I have not been that happy to see a toilet since my last trip to white castle! I recently removed the vintage jabsco electric over board discharge toilet. No room for a holding tank port side, as my new house bank sits there. And.... Since my wife loves me so much and my birthday isthe 27 of Dec, along side that shiny new head was a 19" led DVD combo. Merry Christmas!

My employees gave me a Garmin 4kw radar. Great gift and really wanted/needed. Here is the problem. I was going to get a radar when I was ready to tackle a big project. On the Trojan 350 express, the radar arch is not flat, it has a curve fwd to aft in it. A store bought radar mount will not work. I have to get the welder out here to take messurements. Then the GPS antenns has to be re-located. The mast light bar might have to be moved also. I was going to go through all of this when I needed to replace the canvas because I want to raise the arch up 8 inches. (I'm tall) So now I will have another $500.00 in mounts and maybe more if I get the custom mount powder coated.

My stepson got me a bug zapper for the dock. I got my wife a Mini Glo electric fireplace to take back and forth to the boat.

Don't think you can do that. They are not supposed to be seen past a certain angle as someone approaches from behind. Nav light housings are made with specific angles in mind. It would be like adding red lights to the front of your car. It makes it more difficult to tell which direction the vessel is moving, and the colours would be on the wrong side....confusing to an approaching vessel. You may want to check regs on that.

I checked they are mounted on the side of antenna and are only visible from front and rear and the side as the antenna blocks it from being viewed from the wrong side

You shouldn't be able to see the red or green from astern...the port and starboard lights should only cover an arc of 112.5 degrees, from ahead or slightly off center from ahead.

I think it'll look smart but you may be treading on dangerous ground with the coast guard and other law enforcement. The angles are very specific for a reason. Here are some graphics that may help.

Not only must the side lights, red and green, be seen for the 112.5 degree arc of visibility and only 112.5 degrees, you can not show multiple red and green lights on vessels of our size and usage. When you start adding lights, you are telling other vessels that you are a different size and/or usage vessel. You then may/will incurr some liability if you are involved in a collision. Ask your insurance company if they want to pay a claim when your boat was improperly lit... That is why navigation lights have to be certified to CG regulations. When you start modifying or adding to your nav lights, you need to be very careful.
