I have a 76 F26 with a 1976 318 reverse rotation engine. The transmission is in need of a rebuild. The tag that gives all the information about the velvet drive is worn off. Is it a 70C or 71C that came standard on that boat? Also can you reverse a standard rotation velvet drive or do you have to find a reverse rotation transmission. My hope is to find one and pull the old and drop in the new. Then get the old rebuilt and sell or keep. Any help would be appreciated.

Most likely its a 71C to can use one from a opposite rotation ,but you have to turn the oil pump 180 deg. (very easy to do) a 72 c will work also just slightly longer , ( not enough to change anything)

JW: One very important piece of info you need is the gear ratio because the 71C & 72C ratios will vary to work with the size of the engine. For example, my boat with 427s uses a 2.57:1 ratio. Although Prowler is right about 71 & 72 series being interchangeable, you may need to have a longer or shorter cooler hoses made up.
