1991 12 meter international express cabin sole

When we purchased this boat last spring the cabin had just had new wall to wall carpet installed making it impossible to access any of the floor hatches. Does anyone know how the cabin floor was originally finished off? Also are the companionway stairs suppost to be removalble? There is a new piece of 3/4" plywood under the carpet that extends under the stairs making it impossible to access the fresh water tank sensor. The stairs are also covered with carpet. Any ideas?
