NEW Trojan Owner

Post by fastestonehere »

I have recently bought my First Trojan, it is a 1988 10 meter mid cabin. i have to say i love this boat. it is very ran down and was in need of a lot of TLC.
I just sold my SeaRay 250 sundancer.

I plan on pulling motors this winter they are Crusader 330, 454's to rebuild them, they don't smoke, rattle,or run ruff, but how long can they last. i believe they have around 1300hrs no rebuild that i know. i am third owner. the boat comes out of water around 3400 rpm, i have had the motors to about 4000 rpm don't want to push it but after it planed out the rpms come right up.

do you guys think it is still strong or on last leg. also has anybody here modified their engines for a little more torque or power

now onto the problem, where does the engine room Blower go! i have a good idea but the old owner must of thought he did not need one or two.

there is a compartment behind the Batt. box and in front of the generator does this boat use 2 or 1 and where is the wiring for it located port, starboard.

does any place sell the Trojan 10 meter International Badges. and i need a front hatch white plastic mine is glued down and cracked

Sorry for long post anything specific to be aware of or to watch for, Thanks

Welcome to the forum and to your Trojan... you will like them both.... as far as a blower goes, on gas engines it is a must. Too many people are used to just flipping the start switch and going, but there is always someone who gets burned. Someone in our town had a major boat fire about 1 1/2 months ago while working on it at the dock (so say the news folks....) so it does happen.
2nd on yoru old tru Blues.... they can go for over 2000 Hours and still be very strong. have a competant (please read that part again) Competant marine mechanic look them over and give you his opinion. You may have several if not more seasons in them and save your self some money and aggrivation. My '83 has the original engines, and although there is the occasional issue with my boat, the main engine itself has never let me down. I just finished a 25 day contract runnning it at a minimum of 8 hours per day and she ran fine, with a lot of hours on the mains to begin with. If you are planning on doing very long exhaustive trips away from home, fuel effeciency comes into play, and you look at the diesel option, but how many hours do you have to put on them before you get a financial return? Enjoy your boat, no matter which dirrection you go you will be very very pleased you bought a Trojan

welcome to the site.. Why spend the money on the old blues. 1300 hrs is fine if they still have good compression and the valves seat fine. Have this check before you re-do them. I'd check and worry more about the the stuff that hangs off of them.
What kind of cooling system ? how old are the risers ? Most of the time it's coolers and pumps and the risers that kill gasers not the hours.. And I'm running Merc 340 hp 454's and pushing 23,000 lbs. with 22x21 props and still pour the gas to them when I'm out for at least 10 miles..4200 rpm for 23.5 knots

Hours mean nothing , you don't wear boat engines out on a pleasure boats its the bolt on stuff that kills them when they fail or lack of care . if take care of you have lots of life left in them . Unless they are missing I would not even waste my time checking compression.

Welcome aboard. I agree on the engine advice you just got. 1300 hours in nuttin if they're cared for and the plumbing, risers, etc are sound. You have a lot of questions on electrical and there are several 10 meter owners on this forum who can help you out. Also, contact Beacon Marine, the sponsors of this forum. They can help you out with info, advice and parts.

Congrats. Great boat.

Thanks to all of you. the motors don't have a lick of a miss idle is about 650rpm. The manifolds and risers are all new Revolution Marine units, it also has Elderbrock performer aluminum intake manifolds.

I just replaced the Seawater pump, almost all cooling lines, plugs, cap, rotor, valve covers and gaskets"old ones were bent up and leaking oil" exhaust manifold gaskets, fuel filter and oil and filter change, new spark arrestors" old owner had automotive K&N filters on it.
and new antifreeze in the cooling system.

also when coming in or going out of dock what rpm is safe to change from forward to reverse, I have never had twin screws before. under what rpm is not damaging to the transmissions. it has velvet drives

For original Trojan parts, call Marine Tech. John Leed is an ex-Trojan guy in Lancaster, PA area.
He may have the Trojan logo you need.
Phone: 717-684-4145
Mon - Thurs 8:00 to 4:30 Eastern time.

My small block Crusaders call for 650 to 700 idle RPM in Forward. Works out to 750 to 800 in Neutral. Should be the same for your big blocks.

Good Luck!
