Therein lies the problem. Lithium is dangerous stuff. Its a heavy metal neurotoxin. If it gets into groundwater thats very bad. If it gets into our waterbodies, the next stop is the foodchain, again very bad.
Right now disposal of lithium cells is a huge issue.

They receive spent batteries from oil drilling in Nigeria, Indonesia and other places. "
Then there is the big NiCads on commercial airplanes that use them to power the aux power unit. Cadmium is another bad one. Aaron might have some info on what happens to those when they are toast.
