Anyone here running Carter/Edelbrock carbs on the their GM V-8's and have feed back? Tired of overhauling my Quadrajets every couple of years. I'm a Rochester man but change may be in the future.:roll:

never on a boat Jamie, but the Chevelle had a Edlebrock and it had to be the best Carb I ever bought. I wish I had room under my deck hatches for them...

Many Edelbrocks are Qjets.

I had a Carter AFB in my 454 powered 26. Didn't care for it as much as I liked the fuel economy at low speed and raw power at WOT of the Qjet. The AFB is on the shelf now, the Qjet is on the boat (and the Vette).

When rebuilding, be sure to get a modern rebuild kit with seals that hold up to Ethanol (Viton?)

really, When I got the one for my 383 stoker they were made by Weber, and modeled after the cater abf but machined better than the Q-jet and cater, I never had to do a thing to after I tuned it in to the engine.....but hey to each his own...heck some think that paperweight Holley is a good carb...

Alexander - Yes, Vic bought the rights to the Q-Jet and Weber actually was manufacturing them (I understand they've stopped). You can/could buy a brand new one http://store.edelbrock.com/edelbrockcar ... carbs.aspx

The Q-Jet really isn't modeled after the Carter AFB, which is a very simple square bore carb. The Q-jet is a fairly complex (vacuum secondaries) spread bore carb, meaning the primary bores are smaller than the huge secondary bores.

From Edelbrock's site:

I have Edelbrocks on my 318's. I had never rebuilt a carb before, until 2 weeks ago, and it was extremely simple. I would buy them for anything now.

I don't like the Q-Jets either, but for right now I am living with them. They are rather economical at lower RPM's. Thats about the best thing I can say for them. I haven't decided what I am going to do about them yet. I do like the Edelbrock 1409's though.

well Ross that would be a copy of a spread bore Q-jet, (street carb) as some would say the 1409 and the marine version would be a knock off ABF..

OK Edelbrock made more than on style carb, and given Jamie's back ground I felt I could assume ( I know ) he was asking about a marine carb witch is the 1409's...square bore....

Yes, that Performer 1409 is a Square Bore AFB sold by Edelbrock. Edelbrock carries several kinds of carbs, in addition to the QJet/"Performer RPM" spread-bore brand they used to carry.

I was simply pointing out that the carb on your Chevelle might have been a Edelbrock Qjet.

I have a Marine 75-CFM Qjet on my 26'er 454/370HP motor.

"Copy of Spread Bore Qjet"? Not really a "copy" ... Vic Edelbrock Jr just picked up the line , which Weber manufactured, and added their own "Performer RPM" tag to them. They were originally made by Rochester, and even Carter made some in the last 70's and early 80's.

Curious - why do you guys not like your Qjets? With $4/gallon gas they make sense.

I like my little rochester 2 barrels :D

put 4 hours on the boat in the last month, 4 hours each , 8 hours total, burned 15 gallons of fuel.


I like my little 2 barrel rochester carbs :D

you know sometimes the only reply is :P :P :P

and I do like my Q-jets, when they're tuned and running good. but like all things since they don't make the carb's anymore an update will have to take place at some point in time.... :(

NO more new thats remans for the q jets and few of them

99% of the eldobrocks were AFB type

I don't belive Edelbrock made/sold a new marine Q-jet. they do of course made a marine "AFB" card


My choice of course is no carb . but If had one a Q-jet would be fine and a AFB would be ok too .

Ha! Fished ALL day Sunday on the 14 McKee ... ran to the end of the Jetties, sat in the rain ll day, caught several 3-4' sharks, Sea Bass, etc. and used ...


... 4 gallons of 100% pure ethanol free $4.15/gallon gas .... love that Mariner 40 Magnum.

And no Paul, Edelbrock never sold a Marine Q-jet.

Freezing here tonight again ... 65deg ... Summer in Winter, Winter in Spring .. what next?
