I'm going to do some more work on my antique.
The powerhead does run and start great !
However...
Found my lower unit is leaking gear lube out of the seal behind the prop.
Had very little lube in it and what was added leaked out.
additionally
The roller bearing at the base of the water pump was rusty.
It's a shame, the unit starts and runs nicely
Perhaps there is a used Yamaha 8 hp 2 stroke in my future....

Bearings are rusted because of the lack of oil, most likey had water in it if seal leaking, that's why the gear lube should be checked and replaced every season, and the drive pressurized. The seal is a maintenance item in every drive/make that will leak if not maintained. This will not change with a new unit, just buy you some more time.

This has been a good informative thread (as usual). Got me doing some research and I've discovered most 2 stroke 15hp weight the same as the 9.9s. I was looking for a 9.9 but am going to check out a rude 15hp this morning. It will go on a 11 foot inflatable rated for 15hp.
Is any one familiar with the brand "Saturn" inflatable? Seem reasonably priced and look to be decent quality.....Thanks.....John

"avoid plastic or PVC
go with HYPALON material"
I agree. My Zodiac(PVC) only lasted 10 years. That seems to be an average lifespan for them.

My Achilles has an April 1983 manufacture date. It will be 30 years old soon. I'd say its in real good shape after all of these years, it was given to me on my 8th birthday, and I have used the $hit out of it. The motor needed work this past spring and thats the first money that got spent on the set since it was bought new almost 30 years ago. I couldn't possibly guess at the hours. Many thousands.
