10 Meter Mid-Cabin Windlass mounting.

Post by cmcmjk »

Our Mid-Cabin does not have a windlass. I think I am going to install a vertical (motor below the deck) style windlass and am looking for pictures of where they have been installed. I know the installation must be solid and will make sure of that. It seems to me that the anchor locker door is the right location but I don't want to access the rode (if it gets fouled up) thru the cabin as some of the installations I've seen do.

I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks,
Mike & Cynthia

Are you saying you want to mount the windless on anchor locker door? They are pretty flimsy as is, I beefed mine up just so I could stand on it w/o fear of it breaking. It would take a lot to make it strong enough for a windlass but it could be done.

I haven't seen a mid cabin with this type of setup myself. All the original brochures show no windless in the pics. I have a Powerwinch on the pulpit which I'm almost done working on.

Bob,

I would redesign the cover (probabally out of aluminum) so that it is attached and could withstand the pull of the windlass.

Which windlass did you wind up using? Do you have any pictures of your install?

Search forum for 10 meter windlass under "koviak" posts to see what I put in. Still don't know how to post a link.

Don't mount the windlass on the access cover, not a smart move... For 2 reasons...

1. Theres not enough strength on it

2. You won't have access to the chain/rode locker in the event that it gets tangled up

I mounted my windlass just like "jhalb" has his!!

Works perfect and you still have access to the locker!

Mine is mounted on top of the hatch and it has been permanently closed. I can get in from a hatch behind the mirror in the cabin.

Mine is mounted closest to jhalb's but offset to the port side. It's a Powerwinch and the line pulls in from the right side. It was already installed when I bought the boat so I'm somewhat married to the "footprint" of this unit.

Although, the past couple of weeks would have been my opportunity to change that.

to access the hatch behind the mirror, did you make a hatch (mine does not have one) that is cut a hole etc, or can you remove what the mirror is hanging on??

Thanks for all the pics!

The common thing I notice is that these are all horizontal windlasses. This gets me thinking that there might not be enough room for the vertical style that I wanted to use. I guess a trip to the boat with a tape measure will give me a better idea.

My windlass is a goode vertical motor mounted over the hatch like Tom Sawyers but there was a piece of 3/4" starboard installed over the hatch area first extending onto the deck for strength then another smaller 3/4" piece to raise the windlass for the chain angle, we removed the mirror inside the cabin and cut a access panel and then reinstalled the mirror. If you want pictures let me know next time I am down at the boat I can take some.

Mike,

If it's not a hassle snap some pics.

Thanks,
