Homemade Davits

Post by alexander38 »

I made these davits out of PVC lumber from HD at a cost of $125.00 had to buy a router  so it was another $110.00 The PVC lumber can be glued together just like pipe. I reenforced the bottom of them with 1/4 harden aluminum flat bar put two pcs. in for a total of 1/2. The brackets are 1/4" harden aluminum angle. I'll zinc them then paint with Bright sides to match the boat. They're 48" long and 3" wide I tried to bend them and couldn't. Also tested some extra that I glued with a 5lb hammer...I lost.

They look nice but I'll be honest, I have no idea where they go or how they work. Are they davits or cradles that go on the swim platform. I think I might have missed a earlier post about this project.

Cradles, They'll go on my swim platform. That project starts in a few days. I'm adding 18" to it.

OK, I get it now. The cradle pivots on the swim platform to allow the tender to go in. Cool :D

Here are a few manufacturers of that style. I've considered building them for myself. I might have to try now!

alexander38,

Did you find solid PVC lumber at Home Depot? Everything I have found here has been "celluar core". I was going to use Starboard HDPE sheet but it's much more expensive than what you used.

If you still have the receipt could you give me the SKU# (barcode#)?

Did you make the pivot brackets and do you have any advice there?

For what its worth, I was going to mount the pivots on arms that slide into a "receiver" type mount below our swim platform. This would give us the platform depth needed without extending the platform. We fish using downriggers so a larger platform would not work for us and the ability to remove everything to fish is a priority for us.

Thanks for any ino you can share.

Tony,

What kind of hoist system are you going to use to get the dinghy onto the davits and then onto the platform? How are you going to set it up on your design of boat?
Comment: Having experienced the effort required using a Hurley davit on my F32, I quickly found the video of a pretty young thing lifting what must have been a very light RIB to be quite misleading.
