Enough thinking, just do it, make that first cut, then you'll be committed. Committed to finish that is And you know Tony won't resist helping out.

Paul, are you doing a 2 part door; top flips up and door swings out?

I wished my first cut was on the transom. Mine is through the keel.

What drove this - offshore fishing, or are you moving the dingy to the transom? Many boats your size have a transom door - you should be able to find the hinges and hardware fairly easy. Good luck!

Yes , I felt this was the best way to do it .
The reason for doing it ? there are many , easy getting on / off a floating dock , The dingy will still be on the bow , but will be easier to get on board the dingy . Big fish ? could be . but the main reason because I can ( I hope LOL )

It's a good way to go, I can tell by your cut it's what you had in mind. If you give a good latching mechanism for the top some thought, it can still act to help maintain some of the structural integrity of the transom there. Don't rely on a lock or latch to keep the door in place. Put a lip/door stop on the inside of the transom opposide the hinge side and bottom to prevent movement passed that point or glass the door and transom mating surfaces at an angle much like the cut you made on the top. You should also glass the door and lid with a lip and groove so that the lid locks the top of the door in place when it's down. This may seem like overkill but I've seen what happens to the flimsy doors on today's boats in bad storms. When you have waves crashing against your transom, you'll be happy you did it this way.prowlersfish wrote:Yes , I felt this was the best way to do it .....Big D wrote:Paul, are you doing a 2 part door; top flips up and door swings out?

Re: A small project or what have I gotten into
Thanks Big D most of that is already in the plans . I have look at a few other boats with transom doors for Ideas . A lot of the "plans" are copied off a Viking as I like their set up and I have free access to one . I did how ever find one fault with there design . That was the fact that the door could open if not latched even with the lid closed . I will be putting a lip between the door and lid to help keep it close in the event its unlatched . I guess you have seen this as a fault also .
Looking at a lot factory doors I find most poorly done . Many open "IN " and are very flimsy .

Paul. There is a piece missing out of your cockpit.
Thought I would just let you know in case you hadn't noticed it yet.
