It's because he has seen some of your pictures and you simply leave too many bottles lying around! He has an image at his marina to protect ya know

will this have any effect on structural integrity?

no

let's re-word this

I'm sure you have already determined that this will not affect structural integrity.

The question is how would a layman determine this about his own particular vessel?

Yes it will effect it . In a positive way . I have framed in area where the door will be , Also the inner hull liner/deck that was there is now a more structural part of the transom.

I know of 2 other Trojans that have done the something but with out the reinforcements I did with out issues .

How can a laymen determine this ? like the question Can I fix this myself ? It depends on your ability and understanding of what you are doing and how it effects the structure .

I will try and get some better photos the will show some of the reinforcement of the door area . Also Trojan put a cross the stern (rib ) to support the deck I also put another one right at lower part of the door opening and bonded ( glassed ) the deck to the transom .

I was considering the lateral strenght of the entire stern.

port to starboard.

seems like cutting a notch out of this might weaken the port/starboard flexability factor?

Dunno, just a thought.......

But......

What about adding a "U" shaped aluminum member, say 3" or 4" tube welded together and then glassed into the "frame" - built in - integrated into the opening.

Just a thought,

The reinforcements are all glass and wood ( mostly marine ply) I could have put a metel U in place , but I saw no need . ( I had thought about it early on use SS) . In fact there was no reinforcement "ribs" above the floor area Trojan saw no need . The inner liner of the transom was just there , not even attached to the transom at all above the floor . It is now part of the stern support system , the area of the soon to be cut out it fully reinforced . I expect the transom to be much stronger then before this project . The planing and design has been well thought out . I have looked at many other doors both factory and refits to see weak points and good points . some were not beefed up much if at all ( factory ) basically a molded in hole in the transom. Other were very much strengthen in this area . Thats the course I took . My design is very simalar to the way Viking did theirs and they have done a few .

I'm always interested in seeing what's behind all that pretty fiberglass and how it will all go back together !
