what are the 'winglets' for and are they necessary? just curious.

The down wings keep the water packed under the tab. Without them it gets squeezed out the sides, tabman pointed this out . Bennett sales tabs like this I added them to this set. With the dance floor I put on and the dinghy hanging back there I want all the lift I can get with as little down tab as possible.

Tony, check your hull fastening points every year. The concept is sound but there will be more lateral stress on those points with the addition of the fins.
She was a 1969 36 ft wooden beauty with big blue 440s that we'll miss forever.

Understood on the added stress on the hull. Machine screws and backing plates (fender washers) used to insall in them were I could , more than half on each plane and number 12 pan heads on the rest along with 3m 4200 to seal and bond them to the hull.

And I bolted the wings on just in case I don't get what I want out of them or the screw with operation of the boat
