1409 Carb

Post by todd brinkerhoff »

My port motor has been running like crap. I changed the plugs, and they all had carbon fouling. I checked the timing which was to specs. Its still running way too rich, and assume I need to rebuild the quadrajet.

I was thinking about replacing it with the 1409. Anyone know if this is a direct replacement? Do I need to have an adapter plate?

My Quadrajets had other issues - - their motors were worn out

so I replaced them with diesels

But seriously, didn't Natchamp do this changeover ?

I heard that the 1409's will give you the same economy as the diesel....just rumor of course.

Actually the Quadrajet is not bad at all, if you can stay on the fwd two barrels

With the upgrade to my trim tabs, addition of larger flame arrestors, prop scan and timing advance repair my '83 express went from .7nmpg to .85mnpg.

in my case 2800 RPM was the sweet spot.

no headwind or current

verified through digital tach/sync and gps

prior to the turbodiesel refit

I did the swap last summer. Yes, a direct swap and the carbs run so much better than the old Quads.

Was that on a 7.4L?. I read where there is a need of an adapter plate and some possible modifications. I'm trying to determine if I should have the quad rebuilt or go with the 1409, and ease of installation is of course important.

I much prefer the QJet (I have 3 in use).

When properly rebuilt, the QJet will get better fuel economy,PLUS more power when the secondaries are opened.

They are not "hard" to rebuild - just a lot moire adjustments. Many don't know how to do it properly, and many rebuilders don't care to take the time. You can't simply buy a QJet off the shelf and use it without setting it up to your application.

Square-Bore carbs like the 1409, with no vacuum advance or anything, can be used off the shelf, but are a compromise in my opinion.

I just had East Fork Pro Marine in Hilton, NY rebuild my QJets. They did a great job!

IDK exactly, but it was like 400/500 bucks. Complete rebuild. Soaked in parts cleaner to clean up the gunk, and re-painted.
