Port engine won't stay running

Post by daylategeorge »

Hi Guys,
Having a problem with my port engine staying running. It cranks, fires, and runs as long as I hold the ignition switch up but as soon as I let it go it shuts down. Did this once a couple of weeks ago but then was fine after that. I went to fire it up today and it did it again. Should mention I had a leak in the raw water hose going from my heat exchanger to the riser the first time it happened but have since repaired it. Any ideas? Sure could use any suggestions. Thanks!
Forgot to mention I'm running Chrysler 360's built in '77 in a '78 F32.

Try checking the ballest resistor. You should have about 8 volts when in the run position at the coil and about 12 volts while cranking. It could also be the ignition/start switch.

I second the ballast resister, typical of old Chryslers

I'll also say ballast. Chrysler was famous for these issues. You should carry spares...they're cheap enough.

Thanks guys for the responses. As it turns out it was the ballast resistor. I changed it out after not getting any reading on my meter and she fired right up, AND stayed running! Good job guys! Thanks again. Oh and Striperman, you can bet I'll be carrying spares from now on!

Hey I'm curious...is your starter starting to go on your port motor? I was having same problem...going through ballast resistors occasionally...I'm convinced it was because my starter was on its way out...cooking the resistor???

I replace the starter last week (8+ hours of pure enjoyment)...

The starter should not effect the resistor
