HT window frame needs painting

Post by Trojan26NC »

Guys and Gals,

I need some recommendations on painting my window frames and what kind of chaulk should I use?

I here is a link to some pictures. You can see a piece of chaulk looking stuff I am talking about.

I just finished replacing the front windows in the cabin and I painted the frames with Rust-o-Luem Black paint but was not really impress with the out come.

I am thinking that a paint that I can brush on will work better the trying to tape/cover so much area.

Thanks

Sorry about the pic size I thought I had it smaller then what it was.

After I painted the front cabin window frames and put the new windows back in a noticed it did not take much to nick the paint. The paint job looked pretty good and it may have been my brother couldn't seem to keep any tools in his hands with lettting them drop.

I thought maybe a different type of paint or method would make the paint a little tougher.

I had good results with Rustoleum Hammered Metal Paint, in black, it gives the finish a nice hammered look which is reisitant to chipping and weather, and covers a multitude of flaws, you can buy it by the quart in lowes or Home depot, it last forever and looks good, I used a foam brush, but get plenty of them, cause it really eats them away, and they kinda fall apart after a while , but their cheap,

You could try Interlux brightside polyurethane paint. It drirs to a hard smooth finish. Bare aluminum should be primed with zinc chromate primer.

I did the window frames on my F-26 with black automotive trim paint. It's available at auto body supply stores and is formulated to paint directly onto aluminum without priming. It's UV resistant and is available in a spray can or by the pint for brushing.

Hope this helps.

While digging through stuff my mother had bought to restore the boat I found a pint of zinc chromate primer and some black paint that she had bought for doing the window frames. I will try it and let yall know how it turns out.

It has to look better then what it does now!

Your finished paint job will only be as good as what you are painting over. Sand the frames before priming. You are trying to feather the chips so they won't show through the new paint job. Clean all dust , oil, and wax from the frame before priming. Once primed wet sand the primer with 400 grit paper, removing any brush marks or or other flaws. After the frame dryes use a tack cloth and remove any dust. The black should slick on and flatten so all brush marks melt into the paint. Once the paint flashes don't touch it again until it's dry.

I have done a lot of touch up and painting on aluminum (aircraft). Zinc chromate is the way to go but you should etch the aluminum first. Use white vinegar let stand a few minutes then rise with water, do not touch this will put oil from you fingers on the metal. Follow previous prime with zinc chromate the paint. If it holds up at 200+ mph it should hold up on your boat.

Help!!!

I attempted to use Alwgrip prime (chrome zinc stuff), after sanding and etching. I had a smooth surface. I then started to prime. Everyplace paint was still on the frame it popped. I resanded (everything feels smooth) tried again. The same thing happens. If I tried to sand all the paint off I will be there working for ages.

I resanded and went with Rustoluem primer made for alum to see if that would work better. It works better but still getting the paint to pop in some places.

If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. I will be out by the boat pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to do.

Bill,

You may have a chemical problem going on. Find a rinse agent that removes salts and other chlorides. Most places selling marine paint should have it. I use Chlor-Rid and Chlor-Wash when bottom painting. You find them on line at http://www.chlor-rid.com/home.php.

Lots and lots of sanding and then going back and cleaning the frames. It is not perfect but it will last several seasons.
