How much paint

I'm getting ready to paint my bottom this year. It could go another year without too much problem and it was blasted and painted three and a half years ago so there is no peeling or bad spots. I just want to stay ahead of it. How much paint does it take to cover the bottom with the required film thickness for an F-32?

I use a little less than a gallon on my F30.

With your boat size 1 gallon is usually a bit short. But 2 gallons will leave you with too much. (for one coat) If you are using say, Interlux Fiberglass Bottomcoat you can buy 1 gallon and 1 quart. A partial can of most anti foul dosn't store well. I usually go with 2 gallons and hit it twice. It will last longer. Jimbo36.

<don't laugh>

are there any bottom paint(s) that can be applied while the boat is in the water?

the people who did my bottom several months before i bought it last year, apparently did a really crap job on it, as there are spots along the waterline where it's already coming off.

i will redo it next year (budget, ya know), but in the meantime, just want something i can cover up the ugly with.

is there anything i can use?

TAD... I normally go through just under a gallon for my F32. I used VC17 for a few years and just barely got done with 4 quarts or sometimes needed 5 (it evaporates pretty quickly), but my recent stripping / repainting with Micron CSC took a little less than a gallon (probably 3.5 quarts) per coat.

hey Tuck aaaaaaa NO.
one reason it's coming off they might have mixed paint types. is it coming off in flakes. it'll be hard to tell if you can't get a hold of the guy who owned it before you.

okay. re-reading my post AFTER you guys laughed (which i said not to, btw. now i'm going to have to kill you. so be prepared for some voodoo doll pricking and stuff.), i see that i deserved that.

NOW, lemme restate the question.

is there anything i can TOUCH UP the flaking bits with while the boat is in the water? the flaking bits are above the water line...or right at it at the worst, and someone with much more experience than me told me back in the fall that there was a type of paint that you could apply while the boat was in the water.

now, maybe this guy was jerking my chain, but i doubt it.

with that, i eagerly await your replies....and snide comments. :roll: :D

I'm sorry Tuck but that was funny and it's hard to pass up a chance like that. :D I've never painted like that before but if I were going to try i would put a 55gal barrel on on eside of the deck and fill it up with water to give the boat a list to one side and scuff the spots on other side and paint, let it dry for a couple days and move the barrel to the other side and do it again. This might not help the rest of the bottom but it would look better. And if you want to try doing the whole bottom I've got some scuba gear and a paint brush I'll lone you. :lol: ....sorry Tuck, I couldn't stop myself. :oops:
