Changing hatches ???

Post by EM63 »

My F-32'er owner asked me today if it is any solution to replace all 3 hatches in to newer ones.
Detlef likes more cleaner and deeper hatches as originally installed.

I'm not familiar with the F32 hatches but I found this on Craigslist on the eastern shore of Virginia.

May be worth a look.

Heiner, what's wrong with yiur original hatches? When propeely cared for they work well and look good.

Hi Jamie, it's all very well with the hatches. Detlef only asked me if there are less high and edged hatches.

He knows only the newer yachts and their hatches he like very much.

It is his boat and I'm just the skipper. Maybe even someone from the forum can post a picture of rebuilt hatches?

Does somebody knows the dimensions of the neckline ?

The craigslist ad is very vague. I'd get pictures and a little more info before I'd offer him $1.

I believe he means that the deck rises to another level (ledge) around the hatch. On my F32 the deck remains flat till it meets the side of the Teak hatch base.
My buddy put in low profile modern hatches and he had to cut a larger hole in one direction I believe to make them fit.

Hi Michael - very nice pictures THANK YOU very much.

May be your buddy has some more detailed pictures from above and inside ??

As far as I know: In fact there are no actually well fitting hatches at the market, to use the original necklines ?!?

Every stuff e.g. Bomar has to be custom made ?

Otherwise, David's work is also very impressive:

Sorry no more detailed pictures. IMO the easiest way to go if replacing the hatches is to select a current model and cut the deck to suit. It is quite easy as you don't have to deal with deck finish as much since you are making the hole larger.... just reinforce the new cut edge with solid wood and the new hatch flange will cover the changed edge topside.

Thanks Michael for your statement - but I will not cut anything.
The guy with that custom made hatches did not respond until now.

Have to wait for the decision from the owner.

I bought Michael's 3 hatches from his F32 a few years ago, as spares. Wood framed from the git-go...(Original)
And the ones on my boat are also wood framed. The seller obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. Run Forest, run!
