318 Fuel Filter

I cleaned off the top of the fuel filter cansiter and can only see it says Fram. Its a canister type, orange top, black canister. Does anyone know if this is original and the part number? Also both have fuel line coming from tank going to the OUT side and to the fuel pump from the IN side of the filter. Is this correct...........seems backwards to me. These have been on there a long time and with all the brackets and fuel line protection, I'd assume its OEM ?????? Any part number would be great, I MUSTchange these filters.

Does it look like this?

This is the one that have. I use wix filter 33436. I tried the Fram version and they don't work well because the glue used breaks up with the new ethanol gas. The wix brand doesn't use glue and I haven't had a problem with their filter construction.

I think the Fram fuel filter on my 1971 F26 is OEM. It uses a Fram CCS1136 fuel filter cartridge. I bought my replacement cartridges at Amazon.com.

The black can part seems to be much shorter. I have to be a contortionist just to be able to see it. I thought it might be a Fram HGCP1 or something similar. Any ideas about the IN/OUT directions? Most every other system I've seen has IN as supply side and OUT towards fuel pump. I have no idea if the PO installed them or not, but it runs with them like that........for now.

The Fram CCS1136 is definitely a one-way filter. In order for it to work properly, the fuel line from the tank needs to be to the in and the fuel line to the fuel pump needs to be to the out. Look at the design of your particular filter, but I would imagine you will need to reverse the flow. It may be as simple as disconnecting the two lines, spinning the filter housing in its bracket, and then reconnecting the two lines. Without seeing your particular filter, I can't say for sure.

I seem to recall that not all of these earlier designs were water separators. Can anybody confirm that ALL the units used in the F series vintage were in fact water separators? If unsure, I recommend upgrading to a spin-on fuel filter/water separator; I like Racor. Given the inherent water issues associated with E-10, this is critical.

+1 on the Racors. I am replacing the OE Merc units on mine with Racors sometime soon.

The Fram CCS1136 is a two stage water separator/fuel filter. I believe it is OEM, but I'm not sure. The previous owner used it with E10 for 3 years without any problems. This is my first year and I put a new cartridge in. So far, no problems. 8)

If you go with Racors , Make sure you don't go with the clear bowls not safe or legal with gas . IMO the stock merc. or Serra set up is far better for the money .

A bit late to the party, but does yours look more like this?

https://www.amazon.ca/FRAM-FBM1110PLM-F ... B000XBKC40

If so uses a C1110PL filter, and I last got mine through marineparts.com.

To remove cannister
1 - turn off shut off valve!!!!
2 - put bucket or other container below to capture spilled fuel
3 - loosen bolt on top of cannister lid... that bolt goes into a spindle in the middle of the cannister and holds it in place. As you loosen it off cannister will descend, until it is free.
