replacing distributors m440

i bought new plugs,wires,carbs, and new mallory distributors
i got everything hooked up and running good until i got to the dist.
these m440's have collars where the dist. goes and the new mallory is built for no collars (so there 1/2" shorter)
i figured someone here as replaced distributors at some point on a 440
any help is greatly appreciated
