They were lucky to have help so close by. They did not say how they got the holes or how big they were but it sure sounded like they were taking on water at a rapid pace. Having "crash valves" installed may have helped them out.

Having working bilge pumps would too . The boat did not look that low in the water . I don't know if they knew where the water was coming from . The radio call indicated 1 or 2 holes ,but the interviews did not indicate they knew .

According to the accompanying written story ...

"Coast Guard personnel dewatered the stricken boat and determined that the flooding aboard was attributable to a faulty engine fitting, the agency said."

Sounds like water was coming in because of a through-hull failure connected to the engine.

my guess wouldnt be a through hull but rather prop shaft/couplar
