I like them because they protect the oil cooler and the heat exchanger from getting cloged up . On my old boat did not have one and over heated because what looked like wood pulp cloged the oil cooler passages and restricted flow to raw water pump( by the way it took me some time to find the problem)

I just did mine. Check the rotation of the pump when the vains come across the section of the pump with the screw on the bottom they are flat and move no water when they open they suck in water at that opening and when they close again thet push the water out the other opening so it depens on the ro...

To remove it do you remove the plate or just back off the big nut that has the 2 termanels on it
