I'm planning to coat the new wood with exterior polyeurethane--likely tomorrow afternoon after things dry out from the past 2 days of rain showers. Is that sufficient, or should I consider another product?

For oak, I would use West Systems 105/205 epoxy on all sides of the backing plates, including inside the bolt holes.
