Oil analysis is VERY good if it has atleast 20 hours on it. But more than likely if your looking at a boat the owner has just recently changed it. I've also heard that getting the sample from the filter is even better.
Just a thought.

RWS, Your right I've cried wolf enough
But I don't think you can say I'm not serious ( I was over bid on Black Jack) but have been very serious in my quest.
Prowlersfish, I got ya on the surveyors not knowing but, I'm looking for bearing material and iron ect.ect.
Compression test (IMHO) are just about worthless... If it runs strong and no miss compression has no choice but to be good.

Paul is right, you can't beat the ear. Guess that's why he's the king
I like to start a very cold engine with the valve cover caps off and listen and then look for any signs of steam coming out in the beggining. Tells a lot.

Everyone has their own approach. I never buy a gas engine w/o a compression check - especially an outboard ... takes a few minutes, and its scientific. The ear is not - especially when listening to an engine with an exhaust system you've never heard running "right".
I agree - surveyors rarely know much about engines - just overall condition. But they do have hood checklists ....
