Aaron and Rb I'll send you both all the parts I put in mcck and where I got them when I get home next week. And remember the worst thing you can do to an Onan is not use it with a full load at least 2 times a month for an hour.

I have a Norther lights 4.5kw 3 cly (1800 rpm direct drive) about the same age , only normal maintenance and a pased due impeller. I did replaced the riser last week as a preventive thing not having issues . but after pulling it I should have .RWS wrote:It's a NextGen from Jacksonville, FL
Basically it's a Kubota 2 cyl diesel running at 2400 RPM spinning a Markon generator spinning at 3600 RPM
PArts will be easy and affordable.
Other than oil, filters & zincs, we've only had to replace the oil pressure switch.
She has almost 800 hours on her since 2003.

i do too. i actually learned that from dad when we had our tri cabin. granted, that boat never sat at the dock when we were growing up. we used her constantly. the gen set always ran except when we were sleeping at anchor. on my f-32, once the genset was up and running right, i would run it for an hour, every week with a 60% load. my slipmates would laugh at me but my logic is this.... they are supposed to be used. the more they are used, the more the brushes stay in shape, the hoses are lubricated as are other parts including the impeller. it keeps the 'schmutz' from building up in the cooling jackets. after john and i worked on the genset on the tri cabin on friday, i went back down that afternoon and ran it again for an hour, and did it again on saturday morning. its still getting in shape and the more i run it before i winterize, the cleaner it will be. the governor still needs to be adjusted as does the timing, but she was not used at all last year so it has a lot of catching up to do. i still would not mind replacing it with a newer model though at some point in time.rbcool wrote:Thanks Tony. thanks tony, see other posts i've added about my onan from the f-32. it includes running it as a weekly diagnostic. onans hate to sit and not be used. besides, i love hearing the rumble of it.alexander38 wrote:Aaron and Rb I'll send you both all the parts I put in mcck and where I got them when I get home next week. You are saying it only gives you problems when the engines have been running - is there any chance it is lack of airflow instead of temperature?
You said you crack a hatch a few inches to let the heat out and it is fine... but try cracking the hatch when it starts to stall... if it comes back to life immediately your problem is not heat (it won't cool down that fast....) - its air. You might just not be getting enough fresh air into the area to support both engines + the genny.

Maniac.... good point. I've wondered if I run that blower hose that terminates right at the Genny from the outside vent instead of from the bilge floor if it would do better. Might solve either problem.

Tony, I've wondered about that. But they are both less than 1 year old and she will run forever with a cool bilge. But you've got me thinking I should check the little filter in one of the pumps.

Well I just don't see how it could ne an air flow thing . It's heat and the MCCK is made to run down there . Ive ran mine in the summer and never had a heat shut down. So something is getting heat soaked if you have good water flow then its time to get the infrared out and check temps when it shuts down and sensor could be bad. And the temp of the condenser, spray cool water on it , then if it starts you have a starting point

Thanks Tony!!!!!
UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! took a bud fishing today, almost to Kinsail, he wanted coffee so I fired up the Genny and it ran GREAT for 2 hours. Was hard to start. Have narrowed it down to definately a shut-down sensor. Will figure out which one and check out your suggestion.
Thanks again
Ron
