Not sure how the electronics will work in a boat ast they are calabrad to a bus .( do they even come with a pcm ?) also you need to add marine after coolers ($1800 x 2 ) mounts ($600x 8) raw water pumps ($800 x 2 ) exhust manafolds (1000X2 ) and I can keep on going . Not try trying to talk you out of it . it would be worth it for sure but still some big bucks

Paul,
I appreciate your input and knowledge on this subject.

It is a thought and a tempting one at that being that I believe I can buy both engine for under 5,000, but this still makes it at leat a 12,000 repower. It would be foolish to pull the engines and not replace tankage, props, shafts, logs. struts and rudders while on the hard.

We do not have the luxury of east coast winter haul and having a boat on the hard for a long period of time, plus for environmental and liabiltiy reasons, very few yards will allow do it your selfers much beyond polishing and above waterline work.

Plus, most yards charge around $3 a foot per day for lay days after a haulout, they may work a deal for long term, but the cost rise quickly.

so, all of that said, is a 1977 trojan F32 in reasonable shape worth this kind of investment? that is my real delema

Good news and bad , Props, shafts and rudders , maybe not what size shaft are you running now ? and what gear do you plan on using ? The less gear you have the less shaft and prop you need and if you don't change the prop diameter by much you can stay with your current rudders .

the bad news is I believe your estimate is to low . We pay about 150 bucks a month on land at the marina.

Other parts I did not even incled Heat exchanger (1000 x 2 ) torsion coupler ( on flywheel 600 X2 ) trasmitions $$$$ x 2 the right housings
marine oil pans ( flat to clear)

Is it worth it ?? if you plan on selling anytime in the near future probably not
keeping it for a long time , then yes

theses engines are a steal But and there is a big but the cost of converting them to marine use $$$$$$$$$

most likely the the best and cheapest way to do this is yo find a good set of RTO ( running take outs ) with all the marine gear amd if lucky the righr trans ratio

Paul, understood,
my comment on running gear is that with brand new engines it would only make sense to replace the entire drive with new, and sell the mercruiser 228's as a complete package.

as far as RTO's this might be the best bet, I plan on buying the engines when they can be sold, and will most likely resell them.

regarding your comment on PCM or ECU's, thorugh my work, we repower about 12 engines a year, mostly with Cummins & Deere, and have established a decent relationship with the dealers and techs and can easliy have the engine ECU's remapped for the correct HP / torque for the application, in addition, the current owner said he would and could remap them for me as well if needed.
After running the "old" mechanical injected diesels, the new engines with electronic injection are leaps and bounds above the old mechanical engines. Clean, quiet and sip fuel and man do they sound great! (and self bleeding)

I love the new elctronic diesels But I have no issues with the mechcal diesel ,Like I am running now with no plans to repower.

As far as using used gears ,may boats arew repowered using the old gears How ever your being gassers the ratio most like likey is wrong and I belive you have one reverse turning engine and using Velvet drive gears. ? with the diesels both engines spin the same way . so you would need one gear to revervrse the shaft direction , many gears like the ZF 220a can do this ( you run one in the A postion and the other in the B postion ) you can not do this with your velvet dives ( there are rev direction Velvet drives in limited ratios ) and you need a down angle anyway . If you have difirent gears just ignore me

Know the hotel well - used to spend a lot of time on the West Coast ... step brother lives on Newport Beach ... we bought a company in the SD area 2 years ago.

East Coats Haul out? Not here ... fished in shorts and T-shirt again today (4 of the last 6 days) ...

Like King Paul says - lots to replace ... many try to convert a Dodge Cummins - and find it costs more than the truck did new ....

but in the end ...
