1989 10 meter mid cabin generator seacock

this is a curiosity more than anything else
after replacing the impeller on the generator 4 times I finally figured out
that the seacock was completely blocked with a hard dirty white substance (no blockage in the hose)
it required a lot of poking with a small screwdriver to break things up
I removed the fittings and soaked them in vinegar, that dissolved what was left
It is conceivable that the generator was not used for 7 - 10 years with the seacock left open
the boat is in marina del rey california
anyone care to guess what happened? could salt actually have dried up over that many years?
