not sure if this is of any interest but here goes:

we bought the boat about 20 months ago (with 2 much neglected 454's)
we changed the mechanical fuel pump on the starboard engine day one
after 20 months and about 50 hours running time we discovered
a catastrophic fuel pump failure and pulled 8 gallons (yes 8 gallons)
of an oil/gas mixture out of the crankcase
new fuel pump will go on next week
my guess is the engine is toast

not necessarily

have you been checking the oil every time you go out?

Having seen this many times , I would bet the engine is ok . Engine oil and filter needs to be changed at least twice .
