unfortunately where #1 is on the cap isnt that easy of a question to answer but to find out where #1 on ur distributor is...like after u took ll the sparkplug wires off at the same time and didnt mark anything....what u have to do is take the sparkplug out of #1 cylinder and find top dead center on the compression stroke...then from there see where the rotor is actually pointing too...that would be where ur #1 wire goes

if your question has not been answered yet.................
With the engine set at TDC make sure that the rotor is pointing at the #1 cyl. If not you need to pull the distributor and set it so that the rotor is pointing to #1.
When the cap is set on the distributor number 1 position will be directly over the contact of the rotor cap. You can follow the firing order out from there. Counter clockwise for standard rotation, clockwise for reverse rotation.
You really can set it however you want as long as #1 was set over the rotor contact at TDC.

I believe it's clockwise for standard rotation...and the distributor will turn in the same direction whether it's CW or CCW rotation engine.
I might add also, to crank or bump engine with key with number 1 plug out. Put your thumb over the plug hole. When it blows out, you'll have top dead center, just go back and align the mark to the pointer on the crank or flywheel, whichever is easier. The timing marks will line up two ways, on the compression stroke (correct) or the exhaust stroke. (180 degrees out of time) will not run.
It does not matter where number 1 is located on the cap, as long as the rotor is pointed to the distributor cap contact and the firing order is followed. From there, you should be able to fire up and set timing.

If you are at the front of the engine looking back, as in Rossjo's pictures, the front right lug on the cap is the #1 cylinder.
Hope this helps

sorry.......you are correct Stripermann. I got confused. reverse Firing order not reverse rotation of the distributor itself. Gosh I get confused. I have a standard rotation in one boat and a reverse in another and I always have to sit and ponder a while before I do anything. I like to set #1 in the same spot (pointing at #1 Cyl.) so I always know about where it is, or should be if I change my wires or something. Your right it doesn't matter where it is, its just nice to have a reference for next time you are working on it. Thanks for the clarification.
I hope no one was out there wondering why their distributor didn't turn counterclockwise! I need to be more calculated in my contributions to posts. SS
