Well what do you call your mail cabin area? So many yacht dealers go either way. I've always thought a Saloon was where I used to go to pick up women.
Any thoughts?

that still works your on a boat, my wife calls it the living room for god sake.

And a boat with a saloon, doesn't have a head. It has a "Powder Room"

Let's put it this way...

If you are just using the salon, you're missing something...

The fwd cabin, the dinette, the wetbar, the countertop in the galley, the foldout upper bunk, the sofa/lower bunk, the shower and the bench seat at the transom........

I knew there was something I needed to do with that swim platform...

The correct pronunciation is saloon.

You get your hair done at a salon (I don't - theres' so little left).

And - I have seen women picked up in the saloon on a boat (not mine - the admiral would object).

Many boaters seem to find the word cabin rather lacking the elegance and significance they associate with their boats. Therefore, they refer to their cabin as a salon, a fancy French term for reception hall or a room filled with perfumed finery.Hairdressers, beauticians, and couturiers have salons; sailors have a saloon. The Encyclopedia of Nautical Knowledge defines a saloon this way: “In a cargo and smaller passenger vessels, the main cabin, or that serving as a dining-room, assembly room, etc.” The Oxford Concise Dictionary describes a saloon as a “public room for first-class or for all passengers on ship.”The only dissonant note is sounded by Webster’s New World Dictionary, which allows the use of both salon and saloon but then confesses that saloon is “specifically, the main social cabin of a passenger ship.” Nevertheless, whereas most sailors use the word saloon, most powerboaters seem to prefer salon.It’s possible that some boaters use the word salon because they don’t want their boats to be associated with saloons where strong alcoholic drinks are served and rough men indulge in fisticuffs. But a better choice than either salon or saloon would be cabin. What could be simpler or more correct?

WOW!!!! Thanks guys. Ross seems to have it spot on. Given the 3 page description, Ima gonna call it a Saloon. Seems to fit most of my weekends

at my marina there is a couple that owns a meridian 45. the wife insists on saying fron bedroom,kitchen,bathroom,back porch,front porch, and, i love this, ''the motors are in the basement". ahhhhh i cringe evertime i hear that. i know, it's just me, but for the sake of boating, can we not use correct terms? anyway, it's all in what you make of it i guess. hey, if you have a meridian, i guess you can call it whatever you want.

Actually......if you're west of the Mississippi it's Saloon. All of us east coast effete intellectuals prefer Salon (sniff)

Sorry - mine is a Salon - and you can;t more "East Coast" than me. My dock is on Atlantic saltwater!

... well, as departing Trojan Boater of the Year I can afford to be a little risqué ...

Anyway - I'm going out to my saloon, shoot someone, slam down a shot and go for a cruise.
When I get back, I may run up to the salon and get my hairs done.

By the way - has ANYONE heard from PAUL today ?

I always thought that "Saloons" had horses tied up out front and cowboys, whiskey and whores inside.
