My drives are cooled by the same raw water intakes as my motor, so when I run the antifreeze through the motors it travels through the v-drives.

Normally when you do the engine you are running antfreeze thru the trans cooler . In the case of a vdrive you would also want to do the same to its cooler

My V-drives each have an intake and return seacock directly under the drive. My understanding from the experts is the water runs out of the drive unit when the boat is raised out of the water (thru hulls open of course) There are no external coolers involved. I have done this for a few years now without a problem. If anyone has an opinion to the contrary I would love to hear it. jimbo36

Walter v-drives have a drain plug you can pull to ensure all the water is drained.

dad never had a problem on our old tri cabin with the v-drive system. i believe he just opened the drain nut and let the water out that way. walter v-drives cannot be operated at the dock at idle because of the cooling system. if you have any doubts, give them a call. the email addy for them is http://www.waltergear.com the customer service and tech support are second to none! they can even give you specifics on your v-drives that you have on your tri cabin as each unit is unique.

call them with the serial number and they will tell you if they have ever serviced the v-drives or sold parts for them. Walter maintains records on all the v-drives they sold. If they service a unit or sell parts for it they add that information to the file.

hope this helps.

dad was told by the trojan rep and the walters rep when we got the boat in 1972. they have two seacocks for cooling. one scoop forward facing, the other aft facing. the drives can only be engaged while moving forward or reverse due to the cooling aspect of them. i strictly remember the guy from walters saying this when we had a bearing replaced shortly after buying the boat.

Sounds like that is due to the install . The ones I have worked on use the same raw water and pump that the engines use . I guess it depends on how it was installed .

it could be. all i know is that the ones that were on B3 had two seacocks per v-drive in addition to the raw water pump for the engines. all told, there were a total of 3 seacocks per engine compt (under the aft bunks)

perhaps. some of the things on my tri cabin do not make sense. such as 1. no direct access to the fresh water tank. it's burried under a dresser in the aft stateroom with a board over it. eventually the water fill hose will have to be replaced. i have no clue how that will be accomplished.
2. the holding tank set up.... show me any boat that has a holding tank suspended above the head, in the engine room, over the engine. the hose set up alone is worthy of rub himself.
3. NO ACCESS to the bilge blower motor or the blower motors for the aft or forward head. they are all burried behind panels that i have yet to figure out how to remove.
