Diesel repower
I am curious is anyone has repowered a F-32 with inline 6 cylinder diesels, I have an opportunity to buy two (2006) cummins 5.9 diesels for pennies on the dollar, but not sure if they will fit, ideas, experience or photos would be appreciated.

Yes it will fitt you will need a down angle gear like the ZF 220A (a= angle ) there are sevral F32s and F36 that have been repower with Cummins 6B engines I beleve most are 6BTA 250 hp -330hp mine is a F36 with 300 hp 6BTAs
What hp Engines are you looking at ? what year and gear ?
the Cummins B is a great engine

Hey Paul,
Wouldn't this also require a larger prop diameter and increased pitch? Is there already enough clearance between the blade tips and the hull or are longer struts required?
I would be interested in knowing all that is involved in this type of conversion myself. Would the existing fuel tanks be acceptable ore should they have a clean out plate. Is a fuel polishing circuit necessary for a marine diesel system or is it just a luxury item?
Just curious.

Paul . you could use more prop or less gear reduction or both . My boat came with 20x20 2 to 1 gear now it has 22 x 22 and a 1.53 to 1 gear
Not sure what prop will clear on the F32 . may need to keep it at 18 ? so a 1.23 to on gear maybe in order .
The 6B will clear . yes it is tight but it will clear Rosjo has a set in his a down angle gear is a must .also a marine pan is a must. There is another F32 on here that has a 6B also or was on here .
Fuel polishing system not needed in you use the boat at all . My 6BTA rescirculates 70 gal a hour thru the fuel filters and thats all polishing is .
Some of the lesser HP Bs crescirculates less maybe 25-30 still plenty
Tanks can be reused if not galvanized and in good shape .

The 6BTA is a great fit.
I have 1.054:1 Velvet Drives (Velvet Drive 20-01-001 1.054:1 Down/Drop Angle Shaft Transmission)
I now run 17x20 Nibral props ...
Runs 27 knots top speed ...
17" diameter is as large a diameter as you can safely fit with the stock struts
(I'm on my 2nd set of struts) and still have 15% clearance 9recommended).
Port Engine (the floor is VERY close - notice the rubs on the intercooler pipe)):

27 knots!

Throttles to the pins acceleration (engine hatch open):

Do it! You will LOVE the difference. I only fill up every couple months (135 gallons total).
Put in a dual or triple fuel filter system and replace the tanks while you're at it!
I will never own anything but diesels for inboards again. I also have a 2003 Excursion with the International Harvester Navistar 7.3L V8 turbodiesel ... get 24mpg on the highway and 18mpg towing an 18ft center console boat! Going to sell my wife's 454 Suburbran gasser for a 2nd Excursion with the Navistar 7.3L ... they'll last 500,000 miles.burbran gasser for a 2nd Excursion with the Navistar 7.3L - they'll last 500,000 miles.

The 300/330 engines will be slighy lower then rosjos due to the fact they have salt wate rafter coolers that set lower then the tombstone type Ross's engines have (250 hp I believe) the 210/220 hp also is lower as it has no after coolers
So gettaway what is the rating of the engines ?

The Borg Warner 5000 series drop-angle transmissions are now made by the Velvet Drive division of Regal-Beloit Corporation, whihc now calls the transmission a "Liberty".
See: http://www.velvetdrive.com/liberty.html
The Tranny Dimensions (same as old Borg Warner Velvet Drive "5000 Series") and owners manual are there for your download.

repower
thanks for all of the replies,
The engines are 2004 ISB 260's. they are essentially the same engine in a Dodge Ram. Electronically controlled, thottle and gauge packages and one has a A/C generator mounted in the serpintine belt line.
Both engines are new and have never been installed, one does have a 60 hour test run on a hybrid drive, my friend said the 60 hours were recorded at about 40 % load.
A friend of mine works for a hybrid bus company that has gone bust and they have two engines in the crate that will be part of the liquidation, he has offered them to me for a song.
I don't think I can justify converting these to marine engines and buying new transmissions plus the installation costs and then to put them in a 1977 F-32, don't get me wrong, I love the boat, but .......

Depends on price - marinizing can be done, and Velevt Drives can be found for $3-4k/each I believe.
