1977 Trojan FBS 32 and similar boats with Mechanical chain , sprocket, steering.

I am interestered in buying some old chain, a sprocket or two and a steel rod from anyone who has a boat for spare parts, or who has removed the mechanical type steering from their boat.

PS: Also I would appreciate knowing what size/type of roller chain that
Trojan used in this steering system.

Thank You

Wouldn't it be less of a headache and more efficient, to just install hydraulic steering?

are you looking for spares for your boat or are you doing a retrofit of some sort?

When you rebuild it, take the gear box (inside the lower helm apart) and shim the bevel gears closer together an lube it up good. This takes out most of the slack (that and tighten the chains).

oh yeah ... chains don't leak.

+ 1. Chains dont leak

You also dont have to bleed the air out of chains

You forgot: You don't need to carry a bicycle pump to keep your chains working either!

Check with Bob at Beacon marine he may have those parts . Hyd steering would be a nice up grade or even aTeliflex Big T cable system

IMO Hyd steering is a downgrade, but to each his own opinion.

I'm going to stay in the middle and say that there are pros and cons to both systems. Spoken like a true Canadian eh!

Hi,

Yeah I need basically the parts that operate the Fly Bridge section, that run horizonally across the deck from under upper Instrument station.

It is basically 2 sections of chain, 2 steel rods, 2 sprockets, and 1
gearbox.

All of this is again along the Flybridge deck, and begins where the steering wheel connects to the sprocket on the deck just inside the sliding doors
that allow you to gain access, then it routs over forward thru the plastic
enclosure where it comes out from under the bench seat and connects to
gear box and heads down to lower station. that gear box is the stopping point
of what I need.

Now, depending on what you want for additional parts, I may wish to get more, but I would appreciate a picture and your price.

I had a friend onboard for a short while, had him steer, kinda choppy, and he was inexperienced, and apparently he turned the wheel, expected immediate results, then when he ran out of chain, KEPT TURNING, and broke the chain connection at the smaller horizonal rod, so I wanted to replace the rod, and have a spare parts for future incidents.

Thank all of you who responded, hope this answers your questions.

Chains come in standard sized and as this boat was made in USA using I assume US parts back then, which should be a standard size, you should be able to match your chaing at a good bearing/bushing supply house as it is usually availabel in bulk.
