Has anyone tried adding more flax to the rudder stuffing boxes while still in the water. Is it a safe thing to do?[/i]

The nut seemed to be stuck and was afraid to get to aggressive while in the water but thinking of giving it another try.

Make sure there is some thing on the rudder shaft to prevent it from falling out. I repacked my old (non Trojan) boat on land and when I removed everything and loosened the packing nut the rudder slid right out on to the ground. It was my first time repacking and I remember being glad I did it on land. Water pouring thru the hole would have been bad and possibly losing the rudder on the bottom would have been worse.

You only need toremove the packing nuts nothing else . so the rudder will not fall out.
Are you losning the lock nut first ? you need to hold the big nut and lossen the lock nut . So 2 large wrenches are needed .
