I was under the impression that everything is grounded to the block.
Is there a better way?
I read something about a bus bar?

Nothing wrong with adding A ground buss bar or two . Make sure you running a heavy gage wire from the ground source (negative battery terminal or other good ground) over kill is better as you never know when you'll need more grounds .

Different kinds for different purposes. Smaller ones for lite loads, heavier ones for higher loads such as ones that would need main battery cable sized wiring. Best to hook up to these rather than have a dozen wires and cables at the batteries. The fewer there, the better. Tip; dab some liquid tape over the connections on the bus bars. Also remember that positive bars and connections such as battery terminals must be isolated/covered. Some bars have covers. Some are now suggesting covering negative connections as well.

strongly recommend reading Nigel Calders book "boatowners mechanical and electrical manual" . Its full of allot of good info and has helped me learn quite a bit.
