Charging relay

Hello everyone . Have a question about peoples experiences with charging relays and or I think that's what they call IT. I have it on my LM318 . Not really sure what its for and if even needed . I understand it has to do with dual battery system re preventing it from overcharging . I do have marine charger that does that though . Under same token my distributor was changed from points system to electronic so may have something to do with that . change it self believe is preventing my tach from working . I don't really need tach but would be nice to have all gauges operational . Any thoughts would be appreciated .
