Rare 36D model on the market again

This used to be owned by some folks in my marina. It was sold a few years back, but looks like the new owner is moving on. Basically an F36 tri cabin hull, but 'custom' superstructure and interior layout. More trawler-ish in nature.

To be honest, I have never been totally convinced that 36D is a real Trojan model number. I have done searches through Google, and this is the only 36D that shows up (and 36D suggests there is also a 36A, 36B, and 36C, if not others...). When the boat first went up for sale (when my friends owned it) and the agent labelled it as a 36D, I just thought he figured that from a marketing perspective it was better to call it a 'rare 36D' than calling it a 'Trojan 36 custom', as that might scare some potential buyers away. But I don't really know.

The story I originally got from the prior owners re their understanding was that when the Niagara On The Lake production facility was shut down, there were a few molded but empty TriCab hulls sitting on the property. The empty hulls were sold to various buyers who designed and built out (or hired someone else to do so) decks, superstructures, interiors, and power plants to their own specifications. My friends' understanding was that their boat was one of those empty hulls that was finished off based on some prior owner's specific functional requirements.

Maybe our hosts and friends from Beacon Marine can comment re whether this was a limited run (6 built) production boat or not.

Regardless, this is a unique boat. Whether it is 1 of 6, or 1 of 1... it has a 36 TriCab hull so will behave accordingly, more of a trawler look to it, deeper cockpit, larger flybridge, and more wood-rich and greater interior volume than any F36. Definitely something for someone who is looking for something different...

thanks for the update. if i had the spare $$, i'd probably bid on her. i'd love to see the layout. more pics would help too. it looks like they used an offset double berth forward as opposed to the standard v-berth. seeing how they did that would be great in case a refit is in order. i think i know how it can be done, but seeing how they did it would help immensely.

I agree and I believe its one of a kind . If there 6 you think some one would seen more or a another would show up on the market .

I think it is , there is a gage for hull angle to the left of the helm on both boats . that looks like it was added on

I wonder how it would look with a radar arch and no flybridge?

Something about the geometry of that boat just doesn't sit well with me. Might b better without a flybridge, but still. I hate the stubby Aft deck. I need room for activities!

Agreed... cockpit is very short (3' or maybe 4' at most), but very deep, so not a lot of room but very safe for line handling or children. BUT, the rest of the 32-33' of hull length materialize in interior space, and the flybridge is longer than you will find on any F boat under 44'. I may be telling a fib here, as I don't really know how long the upper deck is on a F36 TriCab (but I think this boat is pretty close to that) and it definitely has more upper deck space than an F32, F36, 36 Tri-Fly, o4 40MY does.

NOTE : I am not trying to sell a boat here.. just trying to share my knowledge and understanding of it with the (awesome) Trojan Boat community in case it tickles someone's fancy.

This boat will handle like a tri-cab, but has amenities that you not likely to find in any other tri-cab hull.

Hi

So, as I look at the photos, I assume this to be a tri-cab hull from the rub rail down with a custom deck....... or did everyone here already figure that out ahead of me? :)

Interesting idea that someone no doubt came up with during some Trojan Board Meeting. Hope they weren't drunk at the time.

Certainly this arrangement was one way to avoid the age old TriCab problem of water leaking through the sole floor and onto the aft cabin bunks (an unhappy, but repairable feature I learned about only too well.)

I want to add that after re-reading my previous reply, it seems to me that it looks kind of critical of the design and/or thought behind the 36D model but that wasn't my intention.

I like all Trojans, plus this 36D to my mind would be a great two person boat with lots of salon space, a big flybridge and a deep/safe back deck with transom door. What's not to like. My TriCab hull was a fantastic runner at speed and handled well in rough water plus was a great boat to back into a slip.

The boat is obviously not a v-drive and now after fully reading the prior posts I see it is an '84. The short rear deck wouldn't bother me and I'd like the large flybridge. The teak decking and railing etc sure look like Trojan installed them. If not, the builder must have had access to not only the hull but also to the accessory hardware etc.
