Hello Trojan Boats Forum, I'm an experienced mariner and have owned several boats, power and sail.
Recently I purchased a 1986 Trojan Express Cruiser 27'. Cool boat - hardtop, enclosed head. The helm seats are not great. I am considering replacing these fold-up seats with pedestal seats that swivel. Looks like a pretty straight forward job, using an aluminum backing plate below fiberglass deck. Has anybody fitted after market seats to a 27' Trojan? Suggestions? Best source for good seats? Also would like to get some storage, so considering installing a box with swivel seat mounted on top. Thoughts? Thanks for your help.

Welcome , I think some have done it on the F26 (basically the same ) maybe the will chime in . That looks to be a custom hard top . Looks nice from what I can see . Looks to be clean boat too .

The seats are also newer/custom as well. Original didn't have fore and aft pleats, and SS tubing went to the floor, not cantilevered towards the cockpit side.

Main idea for this basic design for the seats was that when not in use (ie traveling, or traveling but wanting to stand) you could easily pull out the SS framing, fold the seat back down, and drop the seats against he cockpit sides, opening up more room in the cockpit.

Any kind of aftermarket seat would probably work as long as you can get a pedestal long enough for it. I have seen an old '67 or '68 (I think) 36' Sea Raider (sedan), with a Stidd cockpit seat mounted http://stidd.com/. Looks awesome!!! But $$$$

I like the way the seat supports are clear of the floor. My seat supports rest on the engine hatch, so I need to fold the seats down in order to check the engine.

Original design - the seat legs didn't sit on the removable panels... they sat to each side from what I can remember.

Floor is fiberglass (or framed with plywood base and teak over top), and more than strong enough to handle the legs. The cockpit side wall - depending on year - may be fiberboard... and not really designed to take the load from a cantilevered seat. Check out what the real strength of your cockpit sides are before you try this. If they can't handle 200-300 pounds of force, keep the legs on the floor. You don't just need to cover off your weight.... you need cover off your weight plus momentum when the boat lands off the top of a 6' wave.
